How much did it cost you to win that $250? And have you paid the income tax on it?

btw, congrats! Drinks on you!

2. Thanks
A. I have gone to Bingo about 9 times since I moved up here, at 15 to 20 bucks a pop, so it cost me between $140 - $180 to win the $250.

B. No, I haven't paid taxes, and I'm not gonna, either. It was paid in cash, so there's no record of it...and secondly, far as I am concerned, if Uncle Sam wants to take part in my winnings, he can take part in my losses, too!

I had a similar situation once, where I won $1,000 on a scratch ticket in the lottery. Newedless to say, Uncle Sam wanted a piece. Well, I collected up 1,000 losing lottery tickets, just in case I got audited. Then, I claimed my $1,000 winnings as income...and claimed $1,000 in gambling losses (IRS allows you to claim losses up to the amount of winnings) so that it balanced out, and I owed no taxes on my winnings.

They never DID audit me on this, but I had my shoebox of losing tickets ready to bring with me to IRS if they HAD audited me! Screw Uncle Sam...he wants part in my winnings, he can damn well share in my losses, too. and I don't see anything wrong with that.

5. That's one of the things I love up here
in Canada. No taxes on lottery winnings (which include bingos). Bingos are usually run for charities. We do have big bingo halls, but they are just places to hold the bingos. They rent out all the stuff to the volunteers, who work there and collect the proceeds (minus the costs).

7. Well, In This Case
the bingo was at a local fire station, and the proceeds go to support the Fire Department. Thus, the State never taxes anyone on winnings.

Feds, on the other hand...well, they WOULD, if there were records of it...and, if you win a certain amount, I think, if it is over $500, then they have to pay you by check, and there is then a record, and it does then get reported....but winnings under $500 generally are not reported, and so IRS never finds out.

and, as I said...if they did, i'd just find a way to prove same amount in gambling losses, and make it balance out. Screw Uncle Sam...I won, he didn't. Goddamned if I'm sharing my winnings with Uncle Sam, unless he also wants to share in my losses...ALL OF THEM...

And I don't see where that attitude is a bad thing.

in the end, I have just about broken even anyway, so, like I say, screw Uncle Sam. Besides, if I gave him some money, he'd just send it to fucking Iraq, or it'd end up in the coffers of Halliburton and their ilk, so I feel zero guilt on this.

6. Wow, Bingo - I used to go all the time w/ my dad

he was addicted. We'd go night after night sometimes.

I didn't hate it, and sometimes was amused by it, and once or twice won some money.

The people tho. My God. Trinkets arranged just so. Some get there hours early just to sit at their "lucky table." I remember some very serious players - sense of humor all but absent. "Just call the damn numbers," the most often heard phrase.

but I got involved. I wasn't hating it.

Scary thoughts now....
