What are the last 5 music artists you listened to?
Edited on Sat Jun-18-05 07:46 PM by mvd
Mine:

Courtney Jaye
White Stripes
Alexz Johnson
Tuuli
Hope Partlow

Courtney Jaye, Tuuli, Alexz Johnson, and Hope Partlow really are right up my alley as I love female pop/rock and singer/songwriter music. I already bought Courtney's album Traveling Light, and along with the new White Stripes album Get Behind Me Satan, it is super - even classic sounding!

If I went back a little further, I'd go to Kelly Osbourne (her new album is surprisingly good - it may be grooving to somber tunes as the Entertainment Weekly reviewer said, but he overlooked the fact that the grooves are not Kylie Minogue shiny,) and Better Than Ezra.

23. Oro Solido, Jacob Miller, Eric B & Rakim, Al Green, Sonora Carruseles
All different genres (merengue, reggae, hip hop, soul, salsa)....but all have great horns (the Eric B & Rakim song was "Don't Sweat The Technique").

I'm in a mood for great horns tonight (i.e. I'm drinking), so I intentionally mix genres that have a common thread. It sounds a little wierd, but if I play it for you, you'd understand.

31. Hard to describe, but...
Their a heavy band that incorporates a lot of soft melody for contrast. Most songs are long (6-10 minutes - the last time I saw them the show was two hours and they played like 12 songs) and are very ornate. They alternate between beautiful melodies composed from a myriad of sounds and instruments (tribal drumming, bagpipes, Korg synthesizer) to very primal, bombastic guitar metal (more heavy than fast), often using the former to build to a culmination of the latter.

Their heaviness makes them unpalatable for those not into hard music, but nobody could deny that they're brilliant musicians. One of my favorite bands and probably one of the most underrated.

And that's cool you knew Elliot Smith. I was just changing my mind about his last album. I discovered it gets a lot better with multiple listens.

He and I would have arguments over who was a better band, Rush or Pink Floyd. I opined Rush and he went with Pink Floyd. Then he stole my girlfriend. ;) When I knew him he went by Steve.

I feel stupid, though. They played here all the time back when, and I did not once make it out to see them. Just like I never went to DC Space to see Pussy Galore when they were still a Washington, DC band.

I remember them! Never saw em though.

We don't get out like we used to... we were lucky to get out for a Joe Strummer memorial show a few years back. We saw old band folk we hadn't seen for years. Parenthood seems to do that. ;)

We also go to see our indie cronies who now do acoustic shows. I am doing some drumming for a buddy though who still has a band. I needed to get back in the saddle, so to speak.

my school had a radio station and a friend of mine did a punk rock show

over the summers we would always hang out up there and cause trouble, and whenever we needed an extra couple minutes for trouble, he would put that NOFX song on...

damn...i haven't heard it SINCE then, i might have to go download that or something...

69. I missed the NoFx thing, Mark
the first time around... I was too busy playing in my own band, then going to grad school, then having a kid... so I have been playing catch up with all the punk fun I missed. I love to scream along to their more salacious and bawdy songs when my son is not in the car. Takes me back to my punk days.

A buddy of mine told me to listen to it on the way back from the Pgh. meetup last night. It was interesting.
