DU movie suggestions: Scare the crap out of me!
I'm out of good movie titles! Help! I'm in the mood for a really creepy film. Keep in mind that I'm a huge Lovecraft fan, too. Any suggestions?

BTW: I rented "Alone in the Dark" and "Suspect Zero" last night. How do movies that bad even get made? I want to write to the director and ask for my money back.

1. Alone in the Dark
Would this be the 1982 film with Jack Palance and Martin Landau? If so, good choice!

Creepy... Lovecraftian... hm.... try THE RUNESTONE. Relatively obscure film with a decent cast and a neat Norse demi-god/monster.

9. I never understood what the big thing was about that movie
At the beginning of the film when they are grocery shopping and Heather is zooming in and out at the marshmallows I knew it was overrated. The only reason I still watched it was because I was so pissed off at myself for wasting money on the ticket that I felt entitled to watch them all die gory deaths. In case anyone still wants to see it I won't give away any details by saying if I finally got my money's worth.

10. BW didn't scare me. Thought it was just annoying.
Try "The Ring" or "Audition" or "The Grudge". All Japanese (or originally Japanese) and pretty much guaranteed to creep you out.

"28 Days Later" is a good zombie flick and "From Hell" does Jeckyl and Hyde very well.

"Night of the Living Dead" is probably one of the best classic horror movies ever made.

Have a scary night!

That one creeped me out very badly. There's also a really old, but very disturbing, movie with Robert Mitchum, "Night of the Hunter." Scared the poo out of me years ago, watching it on late night TV.

And there's very little actual violence, it's all implied, and soooooo scary.

30. Not to be confused with "Hider in the House", with Gary Busey
My husband and I constantly accuse the "Hider" in our house of eating all the cookies or leaving messes in the sink, stealing the flashlight, etc.

This movie was so bad!

19. The Japanese version of The Grudge, Funny Games
The Grudge is very frightening, although the end is a little weak. Haven't seen the Sarah Michelle Gellar US version, but I can't imagine its not much worse.

Funny Games is a German flick and there's nothing funny about the games these two guys play with the family they take hostage - that is, unless you're as sadistic as the guy who wrote it.

"In the Mouth of Madness"
"Hell House"
"Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer". This movie is disturbingly realistic and believable.
"Event Horizon" It's OK, at least.

28. Please see Brazil
it was made around 1984 and has Kathrine Hellman in it, you'd know her if you saw her. It's a surrealist film, that was billed as a comedy. It wasn't funny. Now, that time has moved on it will not seen so surreal...because much of the life displayed has become commonplace. you kinda have to put yourself back then...before the internet....to get the full effect....

35. any Hitchcock
I like the ones where you don't see much gore, myself.

Plan Nine from Outer Space. Creepy for the wrong reasons. :silly:

We saw Them and The Day The Earth Stood Still recently. They were pretty creepy, also, and thoughtful.

( you can tell I am not a fan of gore! ;))

50. Jacob's Ladder
It is a movie that messes with your mind, and really makes you think long after the movie ends. Some people don't like it at all, but I think it is one of the greatest films of all time. It is creepy as hell, and actually has something to say at the same time. Plus Tim Robbins is in it, and he puts in a great performance.

what I like to call a "mind fuck film." I saw it when I was like ten, and it really messed me up for awhile. I had to watch it again as an extra-credit assignment in a class on allegory in college and it wasn't a stress-free experience then, either.

Plus, I'll give it this: as scary on the small screen as it was in the theater. Yes, I saw it in the theater. It has the unfortunate distinction of being the last movie I watched before 9/11/01.
