Be careful how you insult your neighbors in front of children
When I was little, my sister and I spent a lot of time at my monther's parents house. My grandparents always compained about the next door neighbor. When they talked about him, they always referred to him as "Jethro".
One afternoon, my sister and I were playing in the backyard and saw the neighbor. We waved to him and said "Hi, Jethro."
He said "My names not Jethro. It is David."
My sister said. "Sorry, that's what our grandma said your name was."
He stormed off.
My grandparents called him that because they thought of him as a hillbilly type and called him Jethro after the character on the Beverly Hillbillies.
My sister and I didn't know any better at the time and actually did think that was his name. In retrospect, we were being rather mean to him without even realizing it.

1. Very good advise. Kids don't miss anything and often don't...
understand when it is and isn't acceptable to repeat it.

I don't know why more people don't understand this.

When I was a kid my grandmother, who smoked, came to stay with us for 5 months. It was a bit of a strain and my brother overheard my mother say "I wish she'd hurry up and leave and take her damn buttholders with her."

The day she left my four year old brother said "grandma, don't forget your damn buttholders."

Grandma replied "Honey, I don't have any potholders".

3. That's funny
Children do pick up things even if they don't understand what they mean.
