Today's underappreciated album: Paul McCartney - Flowers In The Dirt

I'm listening to his July 4, 1990 show, and I had forgotten how many great songs there were on "Flowers In The Dirt", including some spectacular tunes co-authored with Elvis Costello.

Thoughts?

1. Three of my favorite Macca songs are on that album.

"Figure Of Eight"
"Put It There"
"My Brave Face"

Ranks up there with "McCartney" and "Ram" as his best solo albums.

2. I remember that one clearly...

...he teamed with Costello to put a little "Lennon Edge" into the songs.

"My Brave Face" got slammed for being "too Beatle-esque," to which McCartney replied "Well, since I AM a Beatle, who's got a better right to write songs that sound like the Beatles than ME?"

It has two of the best lines in any McCartney song EVER...which were most likely written by Costello..."Now that I'm alone again, I can;t stop breaking down again"...and the whole twangy Harrison-style lead guitar...

I've also read interviews with McCartney about "Put It There," which he wrote about his dad.

All in all, this has got to be one of his strongest albums.

3. The melody of "My Brave Face" has Costello's marks all over it.

I've never really thought it sounded like a Beatles song.

On the other hand, another popular song from the McCartney/Costello songwriting sessions, "Veronica," sounds very "Beatlesque."
