I survived my hysterectomy last Friday
I still hurt a bit. But hey, there were some complciations. The doc showed me photos of the problem -- the fibroid had grown into the uterine wall and the ureters were jumbled up in the mess. I also had a large cyst on my ovary.

I'm looking forward to feeling much better once I've recovered from the surgery. So far, it's slow.

6. I came home yesterday...
My choice. The doc said I could stay another day but I wanted to go home. My bed is so much more comfortable than that hospital bed and easier to get out of.

7. Six weeks....
Seems like a long time. But, when I think how I felt on Saturday compared to how I feel today, it's amazing.

My only surgeries were laps a few years ago. This was by far the most invasive thing that's ever happened to me. The nurses explained everything and helped so much. They earn their money, that's for sure!

4. Sounds like my mom had much the same problem.
For what it's worth, she's doing just fine now, with no lasting problems. I hope you feel better soon!!

8. Glad to hear that!
The stories of other women have been so encouraging. Without them I don't think I would have had to guts to go through with it. (As if I really had a choice!)

10. That's the hard part...
The dog chased one of the cats onto the bed and accidentally jumped on my tummy. I had a pillow on it, as a precaution. Good thing! Then he curled up beside me. I love my critters!

15. get well soon!!!
I'm not sure why the photo of the fibroid is strictly necessary. My ob/gyn is the same way -- he has charts and ultrasound and Lord knows what all, I'm supposed to look at. So far we haven't had to do the surgery though. Who knows what makes these things decide to grow and shrink.

It used to take six weeks to recover, so don't rush yourself. Use it as an excuse to get lots of rest. In a couple months, you'll probably be better than ever.

17. I'm glad everything went well
You'll feel much better once everything is fully healed. Right now, it seems like it will take a long time, but the time will pass quickly, believe me. And well worth it - thank goodness they can do the incredible things they can medically. I think of poor women in the past and the stuff they had to just live with. All surgery is scary - or should be - I'm always amazed at the people who look at it as just a minor thing. I'm glad you got through it well.

18. I was scared more than I let myself admit!
I knew if I'd acknowledged I was scared I'd break down or freak out. It had to be done, no way around it. I will be better -- I think I've been having more trouble then I realized, things I thought were "normal" were far from it.

I went to see this gyn. because I thought I was starting menopause. He said something isn't right here, let's do an ultrasound. That was less than three weeks ago. Smart guy. One of the smartest things I ever did was ask for help. Amazing, huh?

19. You sound like me
I toss things off like I'm all in control and it's no big deal but later I realize just how nervous I was about it all. Also, as I've gotten older, I've realized that no one knows my body like I do - if I know something's not right, I'm pretty persistent with my doc to figure out what it is. Knowledge IS power.

21. cheery wishes for a good recovery. Mine went like a breeze
and even though I had normal postop pain, it was a vast improvement over the other pain from before.

Do walk. every day. Do take your pain pills before you REALLY need them.

You may find you can go a a whole day w/o a pain pill, and then suddenly really need one. Take it. This is normal.

You will be very tired for no good reason even after your pain is gone, just part of the healing. REst when ever you need to.

those stinking fibroids are no fun. I wouldn't be devastated if they told me it was time to pull all of that.

23. Keep on getting better!
I had the perfect revenge. I spent my 6 weeks recuperating at my surgeon's house! I'd known him from the day he atarted Med School and he was a dearheart - but once he warned me before a probe "This will feel like a menstrual cramp" - I decided he needed a 're-education. Cleaned his supply of single malt clear out!

I'm exagerrating (not much) - be good to yourself and don't think you have to bounce back like Superwoman.

I had mine 7 years ago this month. It was one of the best things that ever happened to me.

So rejoice now that you are womb free. The best is yet to come.
