Some English grammar assistance please.
Is the past tense of "shit" "shat" or "shitted"?

As in the sentence:
"The Chimichanga I ate last night violently re-appeared this morning and I shat my pants."

Or:
"The Chimichanga I ate last night violently re-appeared this morning and I shitted my pants."

Please help, as a pitcher of margaritas is at stake. (And likely a new pair of chinos).

Thank you.

1. Incorrect usage
You shit in your pants. You shit a ton of bricks.
You shit a brick in your pants.
However, you do not shit your pants.

2. Depends on whether you're British or American
Commonwealth countries articulate it the same as one does 'sit.'

Americans articulate it the same as one does 'hit.'

So 'sit' = sit, sat, have sat; shit, shat, have shat.

And 'hit' = hit, hit, hit; shit, shit, shit.

10. Shat's an alternate past tense.
And sometime's it's jocular.

"Shit" is probably most common.

6. The nice thing about "dirty" words
is that when the grammar guardians meet at MLA meetings, discussions happen over drinks and don't usually appear in journals or conference presentation anthologies. I vote for euphony over any sense of "correctness"; that is, use what sounds good in context :-)

16. I thought that "shit" was the past tense and "shat" the past participle
I don't think "shitted" is a word

If bush told the truth about something, I'd be so surprised that I would shit a brick.

Bush told the truth about something and I was so surprised that I nearly shit a brick*

If I had heard that bush told the truth about something, I would have been so surprised I would have shat a brick.

*note: this statement is a fantasy prepared for illustrative purposes only. Bush never told the truth about anything

18. Just use whatever you want.
If enough people start to use it, it will become correct after a while.

I don't understand people's obsession over the authority of the dictionary. The job of the dictionary is to document what people do say, not what some higher power thinks they are supposed to say.

So stand up and say shit or shat or cat or whatever! I wouldn't recomment shitted though, it just doesn't really work in my important opinion.
