My pup is having digestive system problems
Edited on Wed Jun-22-05 09:01 PM by tridim
More specifically, bloody diarrhea. :(

Sorry for the nasty subject line, but there's really no other way to say it. I just took her in, and the Parvo test was negative (phew), but she did have a fever, so she's staying the night with a drip. The vet was stumped.. Here's her symptoms.

Two days of watery, chunky diarrhea with a streak of blood today, although less watery today.

She's somewhat depressed, but that might just be from the fever.

Not much interest in food, but she did eat well this morning, and kept it down going on 10 hours. Drinking just a bit less water than usual.

I think it's a blockage (she eats everything), but the vet didn't think so. Has anyone else's dog had similar symptoms? What was the diagnosis?

Thanks for listening. I'm still a bit freaked out from the parvo issue because I know it's almost always deadly. I'm just a bit calmer now.

Edit: Changed the gross subject line.

1. Has she eaten plastic, rocks, or had access to chemicals?

She eats everything.. I wouldn't be at all surprised if she ate something bad. The vet is going to do an xray if she's not better by tomorrow.

2. I hope your doggie gets through it all soon
Good thing I wasn't eating a big plate of spaghetti with sausage links when I saw this though.

4. Well, my cat went through that.
Turned out he had a major intestinal blockage (an x-ray would tell). The first vet said he wasn't eating because of a bad tooth (which she refused to pull). I am kicking myself for not going to another vet right away. By the time I did, it was too late - he died that night, at home. :(

My other two cats now have a new vet, whom I fully trust.
If there's anything to be learned from my story, it's this: don't ever hesitate to get another opinion. Believe me, I wish I did. (he's been gone one month now, and I miss him every day.)

I hope and pray something can be done for your dog.

7. Still a puppy. It's not worms? I'm sure the vet would know that right
away.

I'm sorry to hear about your pup. I hope that he/she is feeling better in the morning.

8. Did your vet mention something called HGE?
HGE is Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis. My dog has had HGE 3 times in his life (he's almost 9). The biggest worry is dehydration, so it's good that your dog is at the vet with a drip. :-)

I don't know if that's what your dog has and I certainly don't want to frighten you, but since your vet is stumped, it may be a good idea to ask him/her about it.

Here are some links:

You can also do a Google for "Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis" for further info.

Good luck! :-)
