Most of us found junk mail, bills and America Online promotional discs in our mailboxes last week.
But at least two local people received $1,000 cash in certified letters from a New Mexico post office box. Both letters contained notes telling the recipients to spend the cash on themselves.
Rock County Job Center worker Jeanne Larsen received her grand at work and turned the 10 $100 bills in to her boss.
The other letter recipient, a non-county employee who wants to stay anonymous, got an identical note offering thanks for past help and understanding, according to Charmian Klyve, Rock County Human Services director.
The note instructs the recipient to "use this on something extravagant."
Larsen, who first suspected the money might be a thank-you for the work she does with food stamps and medical assistance programs, had never met the other recipient and doesn't see an obvious link between them that would explain the gift, she said.
"I have a feeling it was just someone being kind," she said.
She was reluctant to speak further about the letter or the money, which she turned in to the county. She doesn't want to jeopardize the anonymity of the sender, whom she does not know, Larsen said.
And the Rock County Sheriff's Department doesn't plan to pursue the sender unless a detective who started investigating Tuesday suspects the cash is counterfeit or has a criminal history, said Rock County Chief Deputy Sheriff Robert Spoden.
