So they installed a speed bump on my block ...
Edited on Thu Jun-23-05 05:07 PM by BattyDem

but on the warning sign, they refer to it as a "speed hump" :wtf:

SPEED HUMP? Has anyone ever heard that term before? My mother and I were hysterical when we saw it because it sounds a bit ... well ... it sounds like you're being offered a quickie!

"Speed Hump Ahead" .... Every horny person driving down the block is probably thinking, "YEAH, BABY!!!"

5. Yeah, I should run down and take a pic ...
What makes it even funnier is that the "humps" were installed on 3 different blocks and they all lead to an elemetary school. So ... no matter what direction you approach the school from, you see a sign that says, "Speed Hump Ahead" and then you see the school!

I wonder how long it will be before someone calls Town Hall and gives them hell!

2. So does that mean slow down or speed up?
We had humps back home too. The were "gentle" speed bumps. Much better on the suspension.

7. In traffice calming parlance, a speed hump is defined as a
Edited on Thu Jun-23-05 05:38 PM by CottonBear
traffic calming device which consists of a raised portion of pavement (usually 6" - 12" in height) with a 3' wide top and ramp slopes of 5% - 9%. A sign advising of the hump is required in advance of the hump or series of humps along with a 10 MPH speed limit sign.

A speed bump is found in a parking lot or alley and not on a public street. A speed bump is about 4"-6" high and about 6" wide. A speed bump can be permananent or can be a plastic device bolted to the pavement.

There are also speed tables (wider than humps) and speed plateaus (wide enough for a bus to be completely on the top and typically used at intersections.)

Traffic calming devices also include chicanes and traffic circles. Traffic calming schmes work best when implemented along an entire street or in an entire neighborhood.

BTW, I've designed traffic calming schemes for a major university.
There was a need to slow down the insane student drivers who speed in their giant trucks, SUVs and Hummer H2s.

9. So there is a difference between a bump and a hump
I always learn something here at DU! :toast:

What's weird is that no one I spoke to today has ever heard of a "speed hump" - everyone has the same reaction when I tell them about the sign. I guess we all have dirty minds, LOL!

13. I had never thought of "speed hump" in a sexual way until now...
I shall never be able to drive over one of the many speed humps in my city without thinking of speed humping!

15. You're welcome!
The UK is the leader in traffic calming schemes. I studied a book of traffic calming research from the UK when desiging my traffic calming plans. The US is having to implement traffic calming because of higher traffic volume and the problem of speeders in residential areas.

11. Who thinks of these things?
In Vermont, where I grew up, dead end roads always had a sign that said, "Dead End."

Everyone knew what that meant - it meant the road ended, did not go anywhere except to the end of the road, it stopped, it did not continue.

A few years back, some brilliant soul decided to spend a lot of money changing all those "Dead End" signs to signs that read "No Outlet." :wtf:

You mean, like an electrical outlet?

As a person who lived at the end of a dead end road, I can attest to the fact that the level of traffic driving down to our house and turning around and leaving again must have tripled. No one knew what "No Outlet" meant (probably thought it was a scenic drive with no outlet stores) but when we explained that it meant dead end, they knew exactly what we were talking about.

It makes you want to chew off your own foot sometimes.....

Yeah... I had the same thought you did, and snickered accordingly.

How much you wanna bet someone in charge of getting the sign knew *exactly* how it would be read?
