Unless there is disease, the colon takes care of itself by emptying every two or so days (unless there is something radically wrong). Witness that you can prepare for a complete colonoscopy using just minimum laxatives and a liquid diet -- and nothing except a pink and pretty amazing 60 or so centimeter length is visible from the anus right up to the cecum (where the colon joins the small intestine). I know because I saw it on myself while having this procedure.

I wish I had the handout from this doctor about this. He and his associates are amazed that people fall for this sort of information from "fly-by-night" so called natural sources.

The body works amazingly well with enough water and enough fiber each day.

6. My niece is literally 'full of shit'

They have been having a really hard time potty training her. She's often constipated and refuses to have bowl movements. The doctor finally did an ultra-sound and her intestines are FULL.

A kid her age should not have to know the word suppository. My brother and sister-in-law have been trying to get this problem fixed for months.

For the little kids who hold it in, they just keep holding and holding until they can't go anymore.

They've tried everything to train her, and she just won't have any part of it. She'd rather do just about anything than go to the bathroom.

They're not sure if it's medical issues or control issues.

She's a picky eater, but she is only given healthy food for the most part. Even her baby food was homemade. They've tried prunes etc. She's on a kiddy laxative now.

There are times when she's in pain from being constipated. She just won't go, and there is nothing you can do to convince her. Sometimes when you're constipated, you need to try 'extra hard.' How do you explain that to someone who isn't potty trained?

I don't have kids, so I haven't endured potty training. Heck, even my cats were litter-trained before I got them.

My mom told me that once I was potty trained, they praised me for doing my "business," but when they flushed it down the toilet, I began to cry. I was (and still am) a goofy kid. :crazy:

My mom thinks it is a control issue, but she and my sister-in-law have a strained relationship so she doesn't want to interfere.

She might not get enough liquid, but I find that hard to believe. She usually wants juice and not food.

She was such an easy kid in other regards. Hardly ever cried. She never put up a fuss when it was bedtime.

Sorry to hear about your niece. My brother had the same problem up to age EIGHT. It was attributed to a psychological thing rather than a biological thing, though. Maybe it's some sort of mental impairment she has.
