I think it's your laptop. Could be any number of things - bad controller (the circuitry that interfaces with the drive), bad power supply (sending too high or too low of a voltage to the drive), etc.

My moms sony did that, we got her a new one (better) after threatening legal action over the lemon she got. I finally said to the tech after the 4th time that dont you think that its NOT the hard drive but the motherboard? Hes like um.. could be.

I raised bloody hell and even called Tokyo to complain about what was going on. Needless to say her $2500 comp was replaced with a $3500 one within a week :)
