Sheezz. It feels like a 7-point-something at my house
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 12:43 PM by SoCalDem
We had the shingles ripped off our delapidated roof this morning, and now they are slinging the bales of shingles all over the roof, in anticipation of the roofing job tomorrow.. I didn't think the roof would take even their weight walking around, and now they're tossing stuff around up there.. I think all the kitties are under the bed:)

We still had the original roof (house built in 1979), so we needed a roof in the WORST way.. It looks 100% better with the old ones gone..,even before they replace them with new :)

Next up.... painting the outside...and then

drum roll....

KITCHEN ... new appliances & cabinets (I can't wait)

If our 35 yr marriage survives the kitchen, it will be the test:)

I want birch lattice or beadboard finish..my husband, who has hardly boiled water in 35 years, somehow thinks that the kitchen should suit HIM
..He does not like the cabinets I have chosen, and is fighting me every step of the way :grr:. I also want tiled counters and he's INSISTING on corian (ugh!)..

I WILL get my way.. but JesusXChrist.,I would never dream of telling him how to set up HIS spaces..(The WHOLE 3 car garage..the 1000sqFt bonus room ,,his soon-to-be train room...his 12x12 office...and our bedroom (the Oak-Retreat)....WHY can't he give me just 2 rooms to do MY way.. All I want is the kitchen & family room..

He's had "control" over 3/4 of the living space, and he wants to plan MY ki8tchen :grr:

rant over..

I am still happy about the roof :)

I said so.

you've only waited forever to get to do this... you gotta do it the way you want! *hugs*

2. Why do you want tile?
I'm just curious. I once had a kitchen with tile countertops and I hated it. The grout got dirty and stained, and wiping down the counters was always annoying because the bits and crumbs would get stuck in the grout grooves. And the idea of rolling anything out on a tile countertop is ludicrous... for proper rolling pin usage, one must have a smooooth surface.

However, if tile is your choice, then tile it should be. If you be who is doin' the cookin', then that's that.

(btw - i vote for the beadbord)

9. Not that exact color, but that type
Corian looks like formica, to me anyway.. He's sold on the "durability". I keep trying to tell him that I'm not going to dismember a moose on it..sheez...

10. How does the cost compare to other materials?
I ask because our 1958 home still has the original laminate countertops, with the pattern nearly scoured away in some areas.

11. Stone tiles are cheaper than a solid stone slab
They are more than the "manmade" stuff, but I figure, why not spend more NOW, instead of wishing you had ...later:)

The advantage to the tiles is that you "could" install them yourself, instead of having to have someone do it for you:) (or son is an expert tiler, and does it as a sideob)

3. LOL!
We are beginning to pick stuff out to put in the house we hope to be building sometime in the next 2 months. It IS a trip. He does not cook, never does the dishes, nothing. He also does not clean. Yup, we will be going through this too. YIKES!

YOU get to decide the kitchen unless he wants to sign a contract that he will do all the cooking and cleaning of the kitchen.

Congratulations on the roof. We did ours last year getting ready to sell. It really does make things look much nicer doesn't it?

Good luck! :hi:

4. I hear ya,
It's great you're getting a new kitchen. We have our home up for sale, and are trying to downsize in a different state (no kids this time, woo-hoo!!!). But, we have a difference of opinion on how much square footage to get. I'm all for keeping it smaller, but want a bigger, more up to date kitchen, and I don't want to be tripping over my SO all the time. We've been married for 33 years, and you think this would get easier!

6. That's what we are going to do too.

We plan to only be in this house another 5-6 years.. Once my husband retires, we want to downsize and hope to get enough out of this dump to buy a new manufactured home and pay cash for it. We have been in this place since 1981 (hated it when we bought it..still hate it).

It's too big for us now that the kids are gone, but it was in such a sorry state, that we HAD to get it ready to sell. We decided that we might as well enjoy our upgrades for a while, and then sell it.

I hated to tap into the equity to do this stuff, but we finally bit the bullet and did it., or we would have had a hard time selling it later, even in the S Cal market.

I know real estate will probably suck when we finally sell (It always is a buyers' market when WE sell:(..), but we should still net enough to buy something outright.

The plan is to have our sons "buy" the next place (with our money of course),as a "vacation home", and we'll be the caretakers:)
