I saw the movie Soylent Green (review)

A couple of days ago the movie was on TCM. I had heard all about it, but had never seen it, so I decided to watch.

In spite of my political differences with him (but we agree on guns), Charlton Heston is an outstanding actor. And isn't it interesting that he was in such environmentalist movies like Soylent Green and Planet of the Apes?

Well I found Soylent Green to be a very dark, engaging, but at times cryptic movie. At times, I felt like the plot of the story was losing me. I particularly had a hard time following the murder investigation. I know that in the 1970's the issue of overpopulation was very "in", but this concern has proven to be misguided, at least as far as the US is concerned. However, the movie's depiction of tyrannical control exerted by major corporations struck me as a far more relevant concern for 21st century America.

1. Classic! Wishing for a remake.

While I rarely like a remake of a film, a revisiting of this classic, corporate-take-over and subjection of the people is a great hope of mine.

The film is too identified with 1970's from fashions to furnishings and most of all, it has a certain actor that just drags the story down from the opening frame.

Still, it is a great story and metaphor for our times.

And while Orwell and Huxley pondered government totalitarism, they never really dealt with corporate control of the government...fascism.

I still love the film, but would just like to see it remade.

2. I love the staggering scene where he said

Soylent green is people!! Soylent Green is people!


Classic film, indeed.

I did like his work on the Apes as well.

3. It is a bit dated but,

I also agree it is begging to be re-made. A couple other Apocalyptic/Post-Apocalyptic classics, "A Boy and His Dog" and "Zardoz" w/ Sean Connery this last one is just trippy.

7. Zardoz! Zardoz!!

I was a cult follower of that film. It would be a good film to remake for our current situation: the religion factor of Zardoz; the arrogance of the elites.

4. I Think You Missed Something

It is not that the scare of over population was misguided. In fact it was an honest concern and proved to be true. We are living in the result of an over populated planet right at this moment. Why else do you think we are in the trouble we are in - world wide!

The move was an exaggeraton to make a point but do not doubt for a second that the root of our problems today is over population. I often think about this, there are twice as many people living in the USA today as there were on the day I was born, and statistically I am no where near the grave.

5. Soylent Green is part of the PNAC blueprint

They WANT it to be like that-- a few of them in fenced-in air conditioned luxury while the rest of us kill each other for our daily bread (so to speak) and water.

We're a lot closer to fulfilling that vision than most will admit. It' a movie that was very much ahead of its time.

6. I love Soylent Green

And a remake, with some updates and clarifications, would be welcomed. I'd also like to see it in print form. Bibliophile that I am, I just like to have things in print when I really enjoy them.
