I'm not saying they are bad people. But few really have the opportunity to be effective journalists. Why do they want to be on TV all of the time?
Sure, it beats diggin' ditches. I can appreciate that.
However, WTF?

6. Well, if all of those positions paid that much . . . |
|
. . . that would be a good reason to become a local TV anchor.

8. With more local market positions available |
|
and the need to build a body of work, local stations are the only place to start. It's easier to be a big fish in a small pond and hope someone notices them.

There is very little room at the top.

11. Yes, there is very little room but |
|
most of the well known faces started out locally. O'Reilly was on a local MA station many moons ago. Matt Lauer got his start in Huntington, WV. It's not just news anchor positions that could be possibilities for someone with a portfolio from a local station. There are reporter positions that can be a step in the chain, news/tabloid shows too that can generate a bit of fame (or infamy) while waiting for that big break. There's the opportunity to have your own talk show (Oprah ring a bell?).
Exposure is the key and resume building/body of work is the goal. It does happen. Some of these people do get SEEN on the local stations and get offers.
