Actually they are raised in one of the South American countries for human consumption. I had a professor who did field work in South America and saw the "guinea pig" farms.

And here's my obligatory reply to all kitten posts: please do remember to help control kitty overpopulation and have your little fur baby spayed or neutered at 4-5 months of age ;)
And since everyone ignored the sweet little gerbil, I think he's cute too!
