Well, I'm proud to be an American, cuz at least I know I'm free
And I'd like to thank the ones who died
Who gave that right to me
And I'll gladly stand up next to you
And defend her to the day
'Cuz there ain't no doubt I love this land
God Bless the USA!

So Lee Greenwood will "stand up next to" the dead soldiers that have died defending this country? Well, I guess we'll never know whether he really would or not, because I just found out that this re:puke: got a "hardship deferment" from duty in Vietnam because he had kids at the ripe age of 17.

Too bad for all those "stop-lossed" National Guarders today, who are also young, have kids, and have hardships, and yet will not be able to leave Iraq for the foreseeable future.

I don't know why I assumed that Lee Greenwood had some sort of military service. I know it's not correct to assume that when you're talking about a jingoistic a$$hole. I've NEVER met a hardcore right-winger who wasn't a complete coward. NEVER.

I just had to get that off my chest. I hereby nominate "God Bless the USA" as the Official Chickenhawk National Anthem.

1. AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sick of all the pseudo pro-American crap
that is only being used to make political points and point the finger at the un-American left. Check out the Top 10 this week and see all the blue state military deaths. Bring them home now and impeach the bastard in the WH now.

of U.S. history. It is quite possible that without our French allies we as a nation would not exist today. Without French help and financing the American Revolution may well have been lost to the British. We were part of a vast geo-political game of Empire being played out at the time. It gets me that people ignorant of their own nations' past have such a strong opinion about things they know so little about.

P.S. The French were RIGHT about Iraq, 100%!

14. Death is better
I've had that song in my head since I heard it on the radio yesterday. I've been listening to "Love Will Keep Us Together" and the "Welcome Back, Kotter" theme song round the clock to try to get it out. It doesn't work.

12. Last month I was doing an electrical install on the psych wing...
of a prison. One of the inmates was yelling at me from his cell wanting to know if I was installing cameras and listening devices. After I assured him I was not, I was installing a new fire alarm system, he fell back on his bed and started singing, 'I'm proud to be an American, cuz at least I know I'm free!'.

I almost fell off my ladder.

16. I really, really hate that song
My worst experience with it was during the Gulf War. It was during an award ceremony in the Pentagon we ordered to stand while they played it.

I was thinking, why the fuck are we standing? This isn't the National Anthem or even the US Air Force Song?

That was some wack shit.

17. They played it on a cruise I was on a couple of years ago
Keep in mind that this was an Alaska-Canada cruise on a Norwegian vessel, crewed mostly by people from India. There were a lot of people on the ship that were not from the North American continent, let alone the U.S.

And still, the on-stage "entertainment" had us all stand up and sing this song. My wife and I just stood there in silent amazement.

I'm a Navy Reservist working in Public Affairs. We have to cover all kinds of events and that damn song is allways played. I love being in the military and enjoy the military related events but I really hope someone writes another song...SOON!

19. Just imagine a cheesy hair band rendition of this song....
Back in high school they had this "inspirational" assembly featuring an alleged "rock band" who called themselves....

....wait for it......

"FREEDOM JAM"

I think I was completely baked during the assembly, so I don't remember much of it. Standard Reagan worshipping cult bullshit from what I do recall, but their finale was always the "rockin" rendition of Mr Greenwood's hatriotism national anthem. It was actually worse than the original, if you can imagine that horror. :puke:

24. His Chickenhawk status is ever worse.
The lyric is actually "And defend her STILL today." That implies that he stood and defended his country before. He didn't, but he's made an entire career out of that damn song. John Wayne didn't serve either, when far bigger stars went and saw combat in WWII, but he's an American hero. What is it with the right wing and lip service being better than the real thing?

26. You're right; this lyric is even more insulting in retrospect
And the John Wayne comparison is particularly apt. There were so many Hollywood stars that put their entire careers and, indeed, LIVES in jeopardy by volunteering for the WWII effort, including Jimmy Stewart (bomber pilot) and Clark Gable (tailgunner), though chickenhawks like "The Duke" thought it was far better to stay at home and continue to make movies. How disgusting. I don't know how Mr. Wayne ever lived with himself after that.
