Flying to Canada from the US; what documentation do I need ?
I've heard rumblings about needing a passport to get back into the US, but nothing definite. Anyone know ?

Thanks !

1. Not until December 2006
No passport needed until then...in December 2005, you'll need a passport for the Caribbean, in December 2006, Mexico & Canada...

5. Yep - I would take a passport
flew once with only a driver's license (pre-2001) and they gave me a hard time coming back to the US. I showed them a driver's license -- That doesn't mean anything

3. Either passport or driver's license and birth certificate.
Or naturalization papers, if you have those (and I do).

I took my passport when I traveled to Canada eariler this year. It's the easiest to deal with.

4. The airlines won't let you on the plane without a passport
I used to live in Canada and commuted back to the US frequently.

The one time I didn't bring my passport, US Customs and Immigration detained me on the way back to the US (in many Canadian airports you clear US Customs in Canada).

Please bring your passport!

You will save yourself an enormous amount of grief!

7. But just think -- if some handsome stranger invites you to Paris

you'll be all ready to go.

I was asked to go to Venice last year for work with only 2 weeks' notice, and my SO couldn't go with me, because he didn't have a passport (he has lost his birth certificate, so he couldn't take advantage of their costly quick-turnaround service).

I like knowing I have a passport, because, as Chris Rock says (in a different context) "ya never know".
