3. But you know 370 mill for any movie still isn't something to sneaze about

especially seeing as it was made for about 25 million and since no one wanted to make it the profit all flows to Mel's pockets. From a pragmatic point of view the POC is a greater money making victory because how the hell do you get people into a theatre to watch a movie about Christ in Latin and Aramaic and make it one of the greatest moneymakers in cinema history. I mean ROS was easy, it had history, it had geeks with no life who will watch it a dozen times before its out of the theater.:P I may not like Mel's politics or religion but I will give him credit where credit is due he turned that film into a gigantic moneymaker for himself.

how the hell do you get people into a theatre to watch a movie about Christ in Latin and Aramaic and make it one of the greatest moneymakers in cinema history.

Easy, you make a snuff film about Jesus at a time when fundamentalist Christian fervor is at an all time high in this country. Then for publicity, play the old persecution card when someone suggests that it might be anti-semitic.

I mean ROS was easy, it had history, it had geeks with no life who will watch it a dozen times before its out of the theater.:

As opposed to POC that had churches purchasing blocs of tickets and pastors encouraging their congregations to go see it. Not to mention, when it comes to followings, I'd dare say that Christian fanatics outnumber Star Wars fanatics by a fairly comfortable margin.

In the end though, Mel will keep one record intact: highest grossing R-rated movie.

Right there I disagree with you. The whole "Passion" that is a big Catholic deal and not so much a Protestant deal. One generality of Christianity is that Catholics focus on the fact that he suffered and died, while Protestants focus on him coming back from the dead.

But you know to make that kinda money people had to have been watching it more than once and I just can't see that being done for that type of moviegoer. AS to the the numbers of fundies vs fanatics, I wont lay any money on that bet.
