What a craptacular day.
First I wake up to find out that an electronic payment for my school loan got double-posted which means my account is now overdrawn. So, I decide to ask my mom to loan me a few bucks (which I haven't done in over 20 years), she says she'll call me later this evening about it, but I'm so frazzled that I leave my frickin' cell phone sitting on my desk at work. So I have to madly dig to find her office phone number in California and call her from my home phone so she'll know which number to reach me at when she calls tonight.

Couple that with the fact that my rear right-wheel on my car is making some weird freaking noise that I can't pinpoint (doesn't appear to affect handling at all, but it's worrisome nonetheless).

GRRRRRR.

Ah well, I have a lot of good days lately, I guess I was due for a crappy one :(

1. Aw, I'm sorry.
Money jams are the worst, aren't they?

Hey, today I was extra clumsy. I bumped into things, things stuck to me. I even tripped over a wadded-up kleenex on the floor. Who does that? Who trips over kleenex?

2. is the noise a squeal or a grind.
It may be a wheel bearing which is a problem not to be ignored. If this fails completely you could be in BAD trouble. Hate to give more (possible) bad news, just trying to save you an even worse day in the future

3. The thought has crossed my mind, but . . .

normally you can feel a lot of heat from the hub area if it's a wheel bearing, I can't feel any excessive heat after driving it.

It's more like a rubbing/scraping sound . . . almost rythmic, like it's only rubbing or scraping at a certain point in the rotation of the wheel.

5. How much does it cost to replace a wheel bearing these days?
Any idea?

8. OK "car talk" :)
I need Year/Make/Model info and does it have ABS?
noise type?
does noise go away with brakes?

9. 2001 Nissan Sentra SE, no ABS
Noise is kind of a rythic rubbing that increases or decreases in direct proportion to the speed of the vehicle.

The only way the noise goes away with brakes is that the noise doesn't happen when the car isn't moving :).

11. Sounds like a bearing to me.
If noise steadily increases as speed increases I would have to say bearing. Most car problems I fix myself so I don't know labor rates that well. I would guess parts @ around a $100 or so at the local discount parts store. If you have a friend with a torque wrench (some parts stores rent them) you can probably do this yourself. It's not much harder than changing a tire.
Do you know what happens with the complete failure of a rear wheel bearing?

14. oh I don't want to make your day worse, but
you need to know.
Wheel can possibly fall off the vehicle. It can be very ugly at 70 mph on the highway. I can recommend Midas. They'll give ya a free estimate so you know exactly whats up. I think they outlawed 3 wheelers didn't they? I would get it looked at pronto. Best of luck.

15. Nah, I won't go to MIdas, I'll go to the little garage near my office
they do good work and at good prices.

I'll stop by in the morning and have them check it out.

6. Likely your brake pad/rotor needs replacing
They'll start shrieking while your in motion, not just when your braking once they're shot. one of my wheels was doing the same for a week or so a few months back until I got around to replacing them. It started as an intermittant thing but soon it was pretty constant. I felt like kind of a tool driving around in a car that screamed at everyone as it passed by.

7. Well, it's possible, but the rotors and calipers were all replaced not
more than 6 months ago.

10. Oooh I hear ya.
Pay Pal dinged my account 3 times causing my bank account to be overdrawn... then my bank issued 3 overdraft fees (at $30 a pop) on top of it! It took me 2 weeks to get it all straightened out! :(

Hope things start looking up for you!

12. Awwww...
Sorry to hear about the bank... hope you can get them to refund the fees they've doubtless deducted.

My car makes funny noises... but unfortunately I can't afford to worry about them until the car stops moving.

Hope it's just in need of a realignment or something simple...

:pals:
