HELP!: Co-Worker Won't Stop Hounding Me To Go Get High With Him
So I finally found someone at work who I can actually talk to. And he's a really nice guy; we joke and BS all day, it's good times.

But he's a pot head.

A big one.

And he drinks. A lot.

He's 20. I'm 19.

Now he won't stop hounding me to go out on the weekends with him and his friends and get high and booze it up.

Now, not that I'm opposed to the rampant whoring round the town on holiday. That's beside the point. (really!)

I just don't want to deal with all that nonsense. I smoked pot a bit in high school (who didn't?) but I didn't like what it did to me or my friends, so I don't do it anymore.

I'd gladly go hang with him if he just wanted to have a drink or two for "fun"; but he smokes like everyday. And these are weekdays I'm talking about people.

And he won't stop hounding me to go along with him.

What am I to do?

I don't wanna lose my work buddy. He's all I got!

GAH.

1. Be honest with him.
Tell him that you don't like what pot does to you and you would prefer not to.

2. I worked with a guy like that once
I hate to bust out the Nancy Reaganism, but what's wrong with "just say no"? Or do what I did and say you only smoke on the weekends when you have no responsibility.

3. Hey man, it's your brain.
You get to make the ultimate decisions on what you want to do with it. Not him. So if you don't want to get baked, tell him.

5. But would it piss you off if someone refused your (really pushy) offer?
Not saying you smoke the marijuana, just hypothetically. :)

6. Pot smokers don't really like to hang out with non-smokers.
So when he sees that you just won't do it he will stop.

7. If you can hang with him
while he's high and your not - go for it. Believe me if you don't smoke he'll probably just be thinking "weeee more for me" :)

10. Bingo. It's not cheap!
I'm not saying that I smoke *cough*, but I have a few friends that don't and it's never a problem. I respect that they don't want to and they respect that I may or may not want to.

9. You can still go out and have fun with him if you enjoy his company.
I'll let you borrow my tequila rule. When people offer me this vile liquid, and they often do because it's a rather social drink, I simply tell them that I have a real simple tequila rule "I don't bother it and it don't bother me. Period." They usually laugh at the line and take it seriously at the same time. If people say they are offended, I simply tell them that it's not nearly as offensive as me vomiting.

If he presses further, just tell him it doesn't make you feel good and you just want to steer clear. He should respect that. If he doesn't than don't hang out with him.

Other than that, give it go if you enjoy his company.

11. If he is more of a drinker
then you are still on the drinking buddy list.

I worked in bars and hotels and never made friends with the people that I liked at work. They all wanted to go out and party, all the time. I would go once in a while and be reminded of the drugs and drinking and whatnot. It made me not like the people I worked with.
