computer people: what are stack pages??

A message just told me I may not have enough stack pages or some crap. I've never seen that message before. Anybody know what's up with that? I know nothing about computers. The message showed up after I voted in a poll at a website. I'm using Windows 98 on dial-up. I have a Gateway from 2000. Please don't tell me I need a new computer. I already know that. I know I should probably get rid of Windows too. Just can't afford all that yet. I just want to know what's up with the stack pages message, if anyone knows.

1. Sounds like something is going on with your RAM

or something to do with the memory on your pc. You might just have to restart it. Have you left it on for a while?

3. I think I have a major problem

I've been leaving my 'puter on because the last time I tried to start it up, I got really wierd stuff on my screen when it came back. Lots of bright colors and no Windows. I turned it off again, and when it restarted,I got my Windows back. I'm afraid to turn it off again. I HAVE done the restart, though, and the Windows came back fine. Think I have a virus? Norton says I don't.

2. It's a memory setting.

It is set in one of the system files, config.sys, I believe.

Have you installed new software recently, software that starts at boot?

4. I haven't installed anything new

If I had, I would have deleted it after that. This scares me.

5. Sure it wasn't "scratch" pages? That would have to do with

virtual memory, and probably mean there is not enough unfragmented free space on your hard drive for the computer to write the scratch pages to VM (on your hard drive).

and I de-fragment once a week. I think I have a virus.

6. Run a virus scanner and at least a couple pieces of Spyware

detection Software. Also check your virtual memory, there might not be enough. If you need to know how to adjust the virtual memory just respond.

9. Depends. DOS has its own stack allotment; but so does Win9x.

Corruption can make it look like you've got a hardware when it's really an OS problem.

Having oo many temp and cache files could be an issue as well...

You can buy a used first-generation iMac for less than a hundred-fifty bucks that will work fine for years, and run rings around Win 98 in performance.

Theyre good people to buy used stuff from. Every couple of months, I go there and buy half a dozen sub-$100.00 old macs from the to give to battered women's shelters--gives the kids something to play games on while their moms are recuperating, and doesn't cost a fortune.

11. Run scandisk too. Click on My Computer then right click on

on the drive. Choose Properties - Tools. Click on Scandisk. Just do a standard check.
