Clamato? Would somebody please explain this?
Clam juice and tomato juice... Ummm... O.K. So what is clam juice? Ground up clams? Is it the fowl water the clams have been festering in? Makes me want to vomit just thinking about it.

3. It's hugely popular in Canada
I had some today. It's really more of a clam broth.

Have you never had clam sauce?

I guess that doesn't make them true caesars, then, huh?

The only shellfish I like are the "bugs". Lobster, crabs, crawfish and skrimps.

18. Ya can't make this stuff up!

Seriously! I thought maybe when they told me this they were screwing with me; y'know, make the norteamericano look silly, but I asked my father-in-law, a born-and-raised Mexican from Aguas Calientes and he confirmed it.

It just sounds *so* nasty. :yoiks:

17. Don't apologize. You give me too much credit.
I'm an ex-Alberta boy, I have to know these things. I'll bet you'd have to correct my spelling of a lot of Kansan (Kansasian? Kansonian?) place names.

Cheers!

Edited on Tue Jun-28-05 11:06 PM by mwdem
I'm from the south, lived in the northeast 14 years before moving to Kansas. Now, I'm off to Texas. But, last fall, after my daughter was married, I took a vacation to Vancouver, took the Rocky Mtn. railway to Banff, & flew back from Calgary. It was such a beautiful ride! My daughter was in Banff a year before on a business trip & loved it so much. Beautiful country!

10. Actually, it's broth made from boiling clam shells,
just like fish broth is made from boiling fish bones, or chicken broth is made from chicken bones.

Sorry to ruin all the fun, but there it is.

Still doesn't explain why the fuck anyone would want to drink it, though.

22. Yes. A byproduct of the clam canning process...
That was previously discarded and was a pollutant. So, they packaged and sold the pollutant as "clam juice" and thus did not have to pay to treat it!!!

15. Mixed with Vodka
It is a Bloody Caesar and it is quite good. One of my favorite drinks in fact. It does not taste fishy or anything like what it sounds. The same company makes beefamato which is beef broth and tomato juice. I don't like it at all.

Try a Bloody Caesar before you condemn it. Hail Caesar.

Mix with vodka, one after the other, and you have "surf & turf" for alcoholics.

28. That is similar to what my dad used to drink.
A Bullshot:

Beef Bullion
Gordon's Dry Gin
Worcestershire Sauce
Tabasco
Salt & Pepper
optional celery stalk

The only other time I ever heard of one is in the movie "Caddyshack" Rodney Dangerfield's character orders one at the bar in one of the clubhouse scenes.

24. Here...
Clamato is a trademark of the Mott's company which denotes a beverage made primarily of reconstituted tomato juice concentrate and reconstituted dried clam broth, with a dash of high fructose corn syrup, and USDA Red 40 to maintain a natural tomato color. It is also referred to (inaccurately) as clamato juice. Clamato was invented in 1969 in California.

341 mL can of Mott's Clamato. The Canadian package artwork includes English and French languages.Clamato is a popular mixer for mass-market American and Canadian beer. It is also the base for the alcoholic Caesar, a vodka cocktail invented in Alberta and commonly regarded as the national cocktail of Canada. While the original Caesar, invented the year Duffy-Mott introduced Clamato, was made with tomato juice and mashed clams, Clamato is now the common base for the drink. The Caesar has become so popular that Mott's now markets pre-mixed Caesars in 12-ounce bottles.

37. My Favorite Juice
First, the tomato juice is completely strained, so it's got a light body. Secondly, there is hardly any clam squeezings in it. (Around 5% IIRC.)

The attraction is that it's loaded with spices and garlic and has a refreshing snap to it.

I drink about a gallon a week. Really and truly, you really can't taste any clams.
