I am about to drop off my dogs for a week of boarding :(
I hate that I have to take them in to the vets to sit for a week while I am away. I feel so sorry for them, they don't know when or even if I will return for them. I have been spoiling them over the past few days- even cooked them a beef roast for dinner last night. I feel like I am being cruel to them for leaving them but I guess its better than hoping they don't get into trouble while I am away.

1. Much better.
I just heard a horrific story of two young women who left their dogs for a while thinking they'd be fine. It makes me weak in the knees just to think about the details, so I won't relay them here.

Many kennels have someone to come in and pet and play with the animals being boarded. I know my vet does, though I've always had cat sitters into my home.

It may or may not be true, but I've heard much speculation that cats and dogs are somewhat psychic and that if you keep sending them simple messages of reassurance in your mind, they'll pick up on it. Couldn't hurt to try.

I think you're doing the right thing. :pals:

2. Dogs Board
I know how you feel. I hate leaving my dogs at the vets, but you know they are safe and being fed and treated well by the staff. I honestly don't go away that much anymore ----- best vacation in the world is being at home with my two Goldens, three cats and one husband.

3. I'm lucky (and so is my dog). My groomer boards dogs
and when she's with them she's treated like one of the family.

She even gets to sleep in bed with them! Something she's not allowed to do at home.

Of course, she has to put up with additional "siblings" which she doesn't have at home either. But it's nice because I know she's in good hands and enjoying a lot of attention.

Maybe next time you can look and see if someone runs a similar business out of their home near you.

4. That would be nice...
I have six of them so at least they will all be together.

5. Do them a favor
As hard as it is, be calm and do not make a big deal out of it when you leave them.

No crying, no long goodbyes, no cooing and reassuring. Sure, cry outside, sit in the parking lot and shake, but don't do it around them.

You are doing what's best for them, and if you are confident, they will be, too. They need you to be a strong pack leader.

Sorry to come across as a hard-ass. I'm a big softie about animals myself...It's better for them to keep the anxiety level low. Good luck, and remember that you're taking good care of them by making sure that they're safe.
