I was in a Tube (subway) tunnel in London during rush hour and I didn't realize that they also walk on the other side! I was totally going against the flow until I managed to get on the left side going toward the train platform!

I don't mind slow walkers generally, as long as they move to one side or another when I come past.

What really annoys me, though, are people who do sudden, unexpected things in the middle of sidewalks. One time I was walking at a fairly brisk pace across this crosswalk behind this large lady with a huge flapping coat, and just as we got up onto to the curb on the other side, she suddenly stopped dead in the middle of the sidewalk! In order not to run right smack into her, I had to dodge suddenly around her. Well, when I did that, I ran right into a freakin' fire hydrant that was visually obscured by her huge coat! I whanged my knee horribly, to the point where I actually dropped the stuff I was carrying to grab onto it in excruciating pain! When I turned to see exactly WHY this woman had decided to completely stop the second she exited a busy crosswalk with many pedestrians behind her waiting to get up on the curb, I found her standing there calmly smoking a cigarette, surveying my plight with mild interest, while the rest of the pedestrian traffic flowed around her at the curb.

Yes, that's right. She decided that right in the middle of a city crosswalk curb was the best place for her to stop and light herself a smoke. And this was a pretty large woman - not exactly a small barrier to exiting the crosswalk or anything.

These girls were behind me and one muttered, presumably thiking I couldn't hear her, "what is this, slow motion?" I turned around zand smugly replied, "Why yes, yes it is," and started walking even more slowly. I'm a jerk.

I walk faster than average even in NYC. I make my avoidance move early but most folks do nothing for a while, so we end up doing the "in the way" dance virtually every time.

25. It's one of the few things that makes me want to smack people

The worst is when I'm in a mall or a grocery store and there's a group of people in front of me walking slowly, which would be fine if it weren't for the fact they most often walk abreast. I've actually said, "Excuse me," and just plowed through a couple of times and they look at me like I'm the one who's done something wrong.

Most of the time I bide my time 'til I can get around without being an ass, but the whole time I'm thinking, "'Sunday drivers' are bad enough, but 'Sunday walkers'? Argh! Must..control..fist..of death!"

There's probably nothing so important going on in my life that I can't wait 30 seconds for a chance to move smoothly past a little old arthritic person.

And if there is something important going on, most people can prove to be pretty reasonable with the simple application of the phrase, 'please excuse me, I'm in too much of a hurry today.' Especially when delivered with a polite tone of voice and a smile.

It's an escallator. It goes down. You have to get on it for it to do anything for you.

The elevator doors are open. You can get off now. If you insist upon holding the elevator so you can chat with your friends get out of the way so everybody else can get off and call for another elevator.

You do not need to take up the entire sidewalk by weaving from side to side. If you insist upon weaving at least do it with some sort of recognizable pattern so that people can get around you.

I have been a fast walker since early childhood because my parents took us on walks and would not slow down for our little legs. Some might consider that rather cruel of them, but it did make me into a fast walker. I walk fast everywhere I go. I get annoyed when I cannot get past slow walkers when I am in a public place. Sometimes, I even get annoyed when I am hanging out with slow walkers, even my husband.
I have had to learn to walk slower at work though. It turns out that I am a safety hazard to myself. He cited several examples of people who I should model my walking after. Now I slow down in certain possible danger areas like at intersections where there might be worklifts. When I paying close attention and appear to have a danger free area, though, I walk at my normal speed.

I am one. I can't help it. I just like to take the time to stop and look at interesting things I wouldn't see if I walked faster. Now, when I am on the way to class and running late because I was chit chatting, look out. I am liable to give you wind burn from the speed I walk. I never run though. It's against my beliefs being anti-exercise, like I am. :P

38. some of those slow walkers just might not be ABLE to walk fast

I sat in a wheelchair most of 1985 and wasnt' supposed to walk at all. Most of the time you would never know I have such bad arthritis in my ankles and knee, but there are days when I'm hurting so bad that I can't keep a 'normal' pace. I do keep aware of those around me and try not to slow down the flow but shit if I do I'm not doing it because I'm a lazy idiot.

I'm sure you didn't mean to judge those who have a physical reason to not walk fast (well, I hope so at least) but directed this at the dumbasses that don't have a clue where they're at sometimes. Just remember there are some who just can't physically step it up to keep up with a normal flow.
