It sort of snuck up on me.

My brother is having his annual picnic on Saturday. I am never sure when to celebrate. There are always different firework displays on different nights. We usually watch the ones downtown from our street, which is on a very high hill.

I plan to bake a pie for the picnic. The kids play bocce, I make smores and then go, "these are too sweet!", my relatives argue with any freepers that happen to slip under the radar, we eat lots of corn on the cob, steak and cherries, and we get to see all the old friends kids we haven't seen for 1-2 years and how big they all are! Like they are going to college and stuff!

29. Kansas City has a strong Progressive Community.

Not huge, but quite mature, knows what it's about, active with DFA, Greens, etc. etc. Although the AFSC acts mostly like an information source and then they have their own 501C3 activities. They are sure not to get into specific candidates. They are Issue people, which I like because they keep a lot of information handy and they push the information about issues.

The political environment does its OWN thing (which is huge) around the traditional 501C3s like the Catholic Church (Catholic Worker House) and the Friends, who didn't just START doing anti-war projects with George Bush. They've always been about HOW to work for PEACE.

I spend a lot of time at the Meeting House here, since they host almost any lefty/new age organization. I love how open-minded they are about most things.

I've heard they're setting up 440 portapotties for a crowd estimated to be around 1 million people. Even though they said those portapotties will be staffed with fulltime folks keeping them clean, 440 PPs is just not enough for that size crowd.

I'm driving in the night before in order to have my car in the city. Personally I don't really feel like dealing with public transportation since I have a feeling it'll be overcrowded. I can park for free where I'm staying and I'll pack enough in case i have to stay through Sunday

to get the woman out of bed before she wants to be out of bed, and I'm going to drive her up near Bonneville Dam, where we will probably pause to marvel at the people reeling in sturgeons, and then we will proceed to the trailhead for Wahclella Falls. Then we will hike back to the waterfall and tarry there a while 'mid the beauty and the splendor. Then we will hike out and, being hungry from the hike, we will motor clear to the Baldwin Saloon at the Dalles where I will have a crab melt and a pint of ESB or something along those lines.

Monday, I'll probably mow the yard and call my Dad, who is a veteran. Maybe I'll smoke some ribs. Not sure.

My cousin's (she is only 9 months younger than I) Birthday is on Sunday, so every year for the past 5 years, her parents gift to her is to go away and give her the house for the weekend. So she holds a big shindig...we have a barbeque, drink, play games, drink, play cards, drink, go to the beach for the day, drink, watch fireworks, drink....you get the picture :beer: I love it, its a great fun filled drunken weekend. :)

The had to put their old dog to sleep a couple weeks ago. They just got a new yellow lab puppy, so I'm looking forward to playing with him.

They've got a place out in the country which is perfect for all the illegal fireworks I'm going to light off. We went to my in-laws last year, it turns out it's illegal to set them off in the city limits there, some cop came around and confiscated the stuff I was setting off. Luckily, it was just little stuff. While I was distracting Barney Fife my in-laws managed to hide all the good stuff.

I'm in Swissvale, but my brother lives out near Cranberry. So you can see all the different borough fireworks. We usually watch the city fireworks from our big hill here or on the 279 bridge on the way back from Cranberry.

Then the boys will spend the night, staying up WAY too late and I'll make them breakfast in the morning.

when we were kids we weren't allowed to have any. My parents are sticklers for rules, my dad was a chemist and I suspect he forsaw the nasty burns that might ensue, and they were illegal, I think. But we had fun watching our neighbors play with theirs.

84. Cleaning out my house, preparing for my divorce

I'm spending part of the weekend cleaning out my house, which my ex- and I are selling as part of our upcoming divorce.

I'm also going to be looking for a new place to live, too, so I can finally move out of my mother's basement (again)-- where I've been living since mid-May, after I got out of the hospital after a nervous breakdown.

Thankfully, though, I still have my job. Most of my coworkers at the state agency where I work are being furloughed because our pigheaded governor won't negotiate a new budget bill by midnight tomorrow.

Yeah, my weekend's going to suck. ;(

because I'm the assistant to the fire authority having jurisdiction, I get to decide if there will be a fireworks show or not. Everything must be done legally, all permits must be issued,insurance bond must be in place. I will arrive at 8 AM Monday and not leave until near midnight. Fireworks by Grucci arrive tomorrow night and a round the clock security detail is in place until showtime. Besides I get the best viewing spot for the show, 30 feet from show center.
