Animal organisations called on dog owners to take steps to safeguard their pets after claims that a dog was stolen at gunpoint on a London street.
The RSPCA and the Blue Cross both issued statements yesterday urging owners to be vigilant when walking their dogs and to ensure that they have their pets micro-chipped.
Earlier this month Dewayne Carrington, 23, who works for the Metropolitan police, claimed he was forced to give up his three-month-old Staffordshire bull terrier after being threatened by a man with a gun when he and his girlfriend were walking the dog near their home in Ealing, west London.
The dog, named Bailey, was later returned by police after it was found being walked by a family. Dogs Trust, a charity dedicated to dog welfare, said it was estimated that up to 50,000 dogs may be stolen in the UK every year for breeding, selling on to unsuspecting members of the public or ransom demands.
