Attention you French-loving liberal bastards
Edited on Thu Jun-30-05 12:07 PM by Richardo
Now that I have your attention, does anyone know why they (the French) changed 'Bastille Day' to 'National Day'?

It's so bland. Was Bastille Day too confrontational? Bring back bad memories for the aristocracy?

6. When did the French ever call le 14 juillet "Bastille Day"?
I have lived in France more than 20 years and have never heard that.

My desk calendar says "Fête Nationale."

10. Bastille Day had to come from *somewhere*
Could it be an American invention? If so, why?

12. In France we speak French
We do not say "Bastille Day", and I don't know why we would. We say "la prise de la Bastille." French is a wordy language you know.

7. Did they?
Edited on Thu Jun-30-05 01:07 PM by Kellanved
I have never heard anything but "Fête de la Fédération" and "fête nationale". I believe it is the American habit of attaching the reason to the holiday what is at work here.

Edited.
