The nice thing about the Episcopal church is that they allow all to take communion.

10. Are you a splinter group of the Branch Davidians?
Of the BD's there are an estimated dozen or so... surprising that you would be excluded and patently unfair. :grr:

http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/bran.html
# Size of Group:

Prior to the government raid, standoff, and fire in the spring of 1993, there were approximately 130 members. Currently, there are estimates from only a dozen active members to 30 or 50 surviving and active members, including recent converts. There are also groups that have splintered from the Branch Davidians, but current membership is unknown.

47. The "Branch" Branch Davidians?
The Branch Davidians are (were) a splinter group of the Davidians, who were initially a splinter group of the Seventh-Day Adventists, IIRC.

Haven't attended for years (This is for the good of everyone, as I snore rather loudly and church service tends to put me to sleep), but last I knew I was still on the rolls. Once I get moved, I'm probably going to see about helping out at one of the DC churches in the area.

21. As of April LCMS, ELCA (never heard it called Chicago Synod) from baptism.
Edited on Thu Jun-30-05 03:51 PM by JVS
My main reason for leaving the ELCA is that it has become far too entangled in other churches. I wasn't pleased with the kowtow to the Episcopalians (ECUSA) over apostolic succession. I am even more disturbed by being and moving towards being in communion with Presbyterians and Methodists. These churches both have theological underpinnings that do not jibe with the Augsburg Confession (let alone the full confessions of the Book of Concord) and as such we Lutherans have no business partaking of their teachings or worship. I'd much rather see a softening of relations between the Lutheran churches (ELCA, LCMS, WELS), which fundamentally have the same theology but differ in matters of church practice and interpretation.

Another reason is that the local LCMS has Wednesday evening services. As a student who usually has massive assignments due on Monday's, I appreciate their efforts to make their preaching of the word and administration of the sacraments more accesible to me.

50. Former LCMS, now ELCA Lutheran
The reason we switched was we just became uncomfortable with the absolutist teachings in the LCMS. Theological differences with the Methodists, Presbys, and Episcopalians aside, it's like the saying an old Italian-American Roman Catholic told me, "We're all trying to get to the same place." I'll break bread with all of them. Matters not to me.

and yeah, it's "hang-loose."

It's BY FAR the most liberal church in my area. The one time I went to the local Episcopal service the sermon was about how Bishop Spong is WRONG. My Methodist pastor loans out Spong all the time, and the book group is reading "God's Politics."

44. Became an Episcopalian because the ELCA Lutherans
in the Pacific Northwest were too folk mass-y and bland and oriented toward suburban nuclear families. Then I came to realize that, despite having been raised as a Lutheran preacher's kid, I was really an Episcopalian at heart. :-)

The combination of formal liturgies, great music, and an accepting attitude is perfect for me.

45. Lapsed and never confirmed Methodist here.
I had real issues with the fundy minister of the local church when the time came around for confirmation. He thought that he had a direct line to god, which wasn't a mainline Methodist thing in the '70s. I've since learned that he was recalled, sent to therapy and eventually defrocked. There were reports that the Wesleyans took him in.
