1. I've determined that there are essentially only 3 cowbell tones here:

The first (lowest) exemplified by the "Green Bean", "Snowflake", "Esher West" and "Oregon Trail Model 75";
The second (mid) exemplified by the the Cooper "flask", the "Black Beauty", and the "Oregon Trail Model 82";
The third (highest) exemplified by "The Standard", "Edinburgh LT", "Chicken Nugget" and "Alma Cogan Model V"

Maybe my "ear" doesn't discriminate the subtle tones?

4. There are slight tonal differences. You're essentially correct, though.

If you're using the cowbell as it is usually used (just to provide a beat), any old cowbell will likely do.

However, if you've written a concerto for cowbell, you might find yourself saying "Fuck it all! I want the Alma Cogan, not the Chicken Nugget!!!"
