Help needed (language), a new puppy, and potential heartbreak.
Background, a month and a half ago we lost our wonderful companion 'Hope', a gorgeous nearly 12 year old golden retriever who had been diagnosed with advanced lymphoma with 4-6 months to live, one month earlier. Her departure wasn't too painful or prolonged until the last day. When I learned her breathing had turned very laboured, I jumped in the car and drove an hour (behind awful traffic) - got to the house - ran up the walk, in the hall... and... she had drawn her last breath as the door openned - I missed her by mere seconds.

Needless to say, at least to animal lovers, there has been a gaping hole ever since.

We assumed that at some point we would find a new companion, but thought we would look for a mature dog (not rego through puppyhood) - and wait a while.

This 4th weekend, on the spur of the moment - we decided to indulge in Puppy Comfort... going to look at puppies at the locally owned (re: not a puppymill) pet store - just too play and ooh and ahh.

And there we saw this calm, curious and playful, golden ret. pup. We held him, played, held him and played somemore... and realized we were close to taking an unforeseen plunge. We put money down - just to hold him for a few days (no one else could buy him) while we thought about it. Which took all of two hours. We went back and puppified the house - and got ourselves a nameless puppy.

This is where the help is needed. We perfer symbolic names that fit the dog. We have had a Pax (latin for peace) and Hope. We would love to find a name that means "Peace", "Hope", or "Truth". We had settled on Paz (peace in Spanish) but after we bought beautiful pup home - we realized it didn't fit him. We have looked at general translations in Latin, French, Spanish and Norwegian (family roots-reasons). Couldn't find Greek translations that we could read (they were... in Greek!)

Then the potential heartbreak. We took nameless but darling puppy to the vet. He heaves when he breathes after (not so hard) play. Due to Hope's illness not so long ago, we are pretty attuned to different breathing and alert to what might be a sign of needing a check up. On a hunch, we brought in a stool sample as well. Turns out puppy has a few potentially serious (short term life threatening) but not congenital, nor chronic, health isses - including a parasite that makes the immune system weak - and pnemonia.

We could take nameless puppy back, within the next 24 hours, for a new puppy. But we weren't seeking a puppy - we fell in love with THIS puppy. The shop will pay for meds required (or take back pup and exchange for a new one - which as just said we have opted not to do.) We decided to take a leap of faith. Either this pup was meant to be a part of our family - or he was meant to fill, if briefly, a hole in our lives while we were meant to give him some special love and warmth in his short lives.

Vet says that the danger time is now - and short lived. Biggest danger is that he could take a rapid turn for the worse - and that if not treated it could be fatal (pups have died); she also said she was painting the worst scenario because a) we should think through if we want to return pup; and b) she knew of our recent loss (and felt guilty that we had been hopeful that we would have had longer with Hope, than we actually had.) She also said that if/when he recovers (with good chances to do so) that he would have no recurring problems and would be a very healthy boy. So we are acting on faith - and have added that to the list of word/meanings for a possible name.

So with all that said... we need to find the right name for our beloved pup - (and good vibes/prayers for him wouldn't be turned away...)

Any translations for the following words - please list word/meaning/language:
Peace
Hope
Truth
Faith

All help is greatly appreciated.

It sounds like he found *you*.... and you're doing a wonderful thing giving him a home.

German:

Ruhe (Ruhe is more like restful, peace)

French:

Verité (truth)

The others, I would not choose as dog names ;)

Good luck finding something that fits for your puppy, and I hope he is good and healthy, soon...

3. Are you absolutely certain that
puppy didn't come from a puppymill to that pet shop? I have a friend who just had a horrible experience with a dog she didn't realize was from a puppymill until it was too late. Pnumonia and parasites. The dog lasted less than a month and died a horrible death.

She found out too late the dog came from a "broker" who had been arrested back in February for animal abuse and neglect when 39 dogs were found in atrocious conditions in his attic.

I'd be very suspicious of the origin of any sick puppy.

to see someone who has just gone through the death of a beloved pet back in the same situation. That is what happened to my friend. She bought the puppy to replace the 13-year-old dog she had just recently had to "put to sleep," and she was devastated to lose the second dog less than a month later.

9. two lines of goldens - with one of the owners
being related to the owner of the store - are their primary sources of goldens including this puppy.

that isn't to say that there are no puppy mill babes - and my understanding is that some infections can spread quickly at a shop. So whle I am positive ours is not a puppy mill babe, I can not say that a puppy mill wasn't the origin of the problem.

12. Maybe not a puppy mill...
But at the least an unreputable breeder - whether you know the owner of the shop or whatever or not.

Any reputable breeder will ask you a series of questions about your lifestyle, your home, etc - many will even insist on a home visit - before selling you one of their puppies.

Please, in the future, do not EVER buy from a pet shop. EVER. Too many lovely purebred dogs and puppies in rescues and shelters. Almost 30% of dogs in shelters and rescues are purebreds.

I could never take the puppy back myself, so totally understand your feelings there.

But definitely don't ever consider a pet shop again. So many people buy from pet shops in the "heat of the moment" and get very sick puppies like yours (or worse, I heard a statistic once that nowadays with all pet shop puppies coming from irresponsible breeders, you have something like a 55% chance of the dog dying within 30 days of purchase). I was perfectly nice - wished them well, and I do mean it. Just saying, this is why you never buy any animal from a pet store - they are ALWAYS bred by irresponsible greedy people who are only in it for profit, and could care less what kind of terminally ill animal they sell you.

These people sound like good owners, and good people. I just wanted them to know they are not alone, and in the future not to buy from a pet store so this tragedy never happens again - the animals don't deserve it and neither do the owners who fall in love with the pets. Just saying, don't ever buy animals from a pet shop.

Both are very healthy.
And I personally know people that bought a golden retriever puppy from a breeder-and spend thousands on operations for his legs, because that puppy has a genetic defect. Of course the breeder would have exchanged the puppy-but they love the one they got. There is no guarantee in life for anything.

45. A parrot isn't quite the same as a dog or cat
Edited on Wed Jul-06-05 11:55 PM by friesianrider
Because there aren't parrot mills...

But I can guarantee that if you buy from a pet store, you are dramatically increasing your chances of buying a dog/cat with congenital problems, genetic problems, or other life-threatening health problems. Any breeder who sells their animals to a pet shop is not breeding carefully or ethically. They are doing it to make money with little regard to the type of pups they are producing. People who do this (and those who keep them in business by purchasing their dogs) contribute to the killing of millions of homeless dogs and cats every year because of overpopulation due to irresponsible breeding.

I will re-state that NO reputable breeder of particularly dogs and cats will ever place their animals for sale in a pet store. A reputable breeder is someone who takes great care to breed healthy and happe puppies, who dedicate themselves to breeding quality animals and raising them with premium socialization and care. Not only can this not happen living in a pet store, but reputable breeders will only sell their animals to people who have been thoroughly screened, inside and out. Again, impossible at a pet store.

BTW, your friend who bought from a breeder likely bought from a "backyard breeder" - people who have two "purebred" dogs they likely bought from a pet store and breed them to sell the pups and make some cash. The usually know very little about the breed, birthing pups, properly socializing them, finding them proper, forever homes, knowledgeable about health/behavioral problems that run in the breed, etc etc etc. The list goes on. MOST responsible breeders will not even breed their dogs until they have all the puppies sold to carefully screened, pre-approved buyers.

It is extremely difficult to find a reputable, responsible breeder. But if you choose to knowingly buy from a pet store, you take your chances with what you get. Almost 30% of dogs in shelters and rescues are purebreds. There really is no reason IMHO to buy any dog or cat from anyone, but that's my own personal feeling.

53. Nope. It was supposedly a good breeder.
They lost their previous dog, also a golden retriever, because of genetic problems, so I believe they really were very serious about it.
But the dog still ended up being genetically defective.

54. One must be very careful...
I came thisclose to buying a Jack Russell from someone I thought was reputable - and as you can tell I'm a lunatic about animals (probably because I work at a shelter and see around 10 healthy, happy animals euthanized everyday just because there are too many and too few homes) and spent literally months researching the breed, if it is right for me, breeders, their breeding philosophies, etc. I checked this lady out through and through, but when I checked out her reputation within the JRT community, found out she rarely had fewer than 20 puppies for sale at any given time. Just no way someone can properly socialize and raise 20 puppies at one time.

I'll tell ya, I ended up adopting and felt MUCH better about it - got a young purebred whose temperment was known and saved a life (for about 1/6 the cost of buying). One needs to be EXTREMELY careful before buying a dog from anybody - and should be willing to dedicate lots of time to researching the breeder. If the breeder doesn't grill you the same way, it isn't a reputable breeder.

dollars on operations for this dog, so, they weren't concerned about money when buying the dog. It's just that you can not guarantee anything in this life. Obviously, they don't want to give the dog back to the breeder because they are already attached to the dog, so, they are spending all that money to fix his problems. You could adopt from a shelter and have your pet get sick from some infection he got while there. You could buy from a breeder and get a defective pet.
Nothing in this life is for sure.

57. Of course...
I'd imagine it'd be impossible to give up a dog/cat/pet once you've had it for any longer than a few hours lol ;)

I agree with you nothing is guaranteed, so that is why one should spend ample time thoroughly researching a breeder and make sure the breeder spends ample time researching them or walk away. Buying from a pet store is like asking for trouble and heartache. Or better yet, bypass all of this time and money and adopt a homeless pet in need for a cheaper adoption fee and save a pet's life! Amazing how many purebreds are homeless... :)

Edited on Wed Jul-06-05 09:10 PM by friesianrider
I'm so sorry for your situation, truly I am, and hope this doesn't sound harsh because I know you're in a tough spot here, but this is a shining example of why one should NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER buy from a pet shop. EVER, EVER, EVER.

Any breeder - and I mean ANY breeder - who would sell their puppies to a pet shop is a BAD breeder. Chances are this puppy and the rest of the puppies in that pet shop came from a puppy mill. At the very least, it came from a unreputable breeder. I do not breed anything and never would, but have several friends who are respectable breeders of purebred dogs. None of them would ever even for a moment consider selling their pups to or at a pet shop. There is no guarantee of what type of home their pup will end up in - the breeder cannot screen potential buyers. Any respectable breeder who is in in for the right reasons and not just for the money from churning out pups will be very careful who they sell their pups to - and this type of concern and care of where pups end up is absolutely impossible in a pet shop. In fact, nearly all reputable breeders today won't even do the breeding until they have the litter sold beforehand - that way they don't have puppies they "need to sell". They are sold before a breeding even takes place.

This is why adoption should be EVERYONE'S first choice. Please don't breed or buy while so many healthy, homeless dogs die everyday.

If I were you, I'd keep the pup you've got. The pet shop, guaranteed, will just sell your puppy to someone else.

I did read the whole post, and all I wanted to say is while I'm sorry this is happening to you, it is expected from pet shop puppies. You don't ever buy a pet from a pet shop, especially nowadays. The animals come from one of two places: a puppymill or an irresponsible backyard breeder in it for the money.

No reputable breeder EVER sells their pups at a pet shop. None. So unfortunately you're automatically buying a dog from poor breeding - aIt's what happens to 70%-80% of dogs bought in pet shops - except most of them die within a year of their purchase. I'm not trying to be insensitive, just making a point, I promise.

Honorable attributes for you to recognize within your pup, regardless of his origin.

I believe that you can wrap all of your desires for this pup up in one word: Namaste.

Namaste, as defined by Deepak Chopra, for the layman, is "“I honor the Spirit in you which is also in me.” Let Peace, Hope, Truth and Faith transcend your thoughts and beliefs and be reflected in your companion. Namaste embodies all that is positive that you can find and feel in another.

Namaste, Salin, and to your puppy as well. I wish you all the best.

only prob would be a male with a name that starts with something that sounds like "she". But - doing this in print can lose something in the translation. Good friend's mother is Japanese - I'll ask her how she prounces this.

Again, many thanks.

51. Well, if you could add that certain Irish lilt to it,
It'd be lovely.

How about Cuchulain (coo-hoo-lun), the Hound of Ulster?

39. When we started the name quest - this might not have made sense,
now given this pup's tempremant (calm, loving, curious, enthusiastic) - and his illness... almost a zen puppy. The name would fit.

47. Be careful.. his "calm disposition" will probably change
when he's well and feeling better:evilgrin:..

I would call him BabyBoy until he recovers.. his true name will reveal itself.:)

49. funny, but even the doc (vet)
sees that there is little, so far, that appears to be "wrong" externally. Doesn't predict a different disposition. Hopefully she's right... :D

41. Actually for the first 12+ hours we tried Paz
but it just didn't sound right/fit him. He hadn't yet learned to respond to it, and we realized that we were still "in the hunt" for the right name.

For the Italian - is it pronounced Pace (as in English) or Pa-ce (as in the end E is pronounced?)

52. no language, though Norwegian does have a leg up
as my mother is fluent - and her children all have norwegian names, though to date, no animals.

I have taken some pics - but haven't had a chance to do anything with them yet. And with this news (per the percarious health) - I will probably waith until we know he is out of the woods. Just a bit supersticious, perhaps. But when we come out on the otherside (which I pray, and believe that we will) - I will post both current pics (then current) and the earlier ones (eg those that are current today in early july.)

Thanks for the request.

58. I have a story about a dog named "Hope"
A good friend of mine was battling a very severe form of throat cancer for about a year. He and his wife had 2 Golden Retrievers, but they had always wanted a Newfoundland. Since they had long ago learned that life isn't certain, they decided to get a Newfoundland pup to enjoy together.

They got their pup, and because my friend had been through such hard times with his cancer, they named the pup "Hope".

I think "Hope" is a beautiful name for your pup. I am sending good thoughts to you and your pup...keep us posted.

59. Update
Name: Pace (Pah-chay - Italian for Peace)
Slightly deeper cough, but more energy and appetite, and lower temperature. so far - so good.

The boy is so affectionate. We are keeping him very close - so that if he were to take a turn for the worse no time would be lost in addressing the problem. I can't help but think that this period, may we be so lucky for it to be just a period, will strengthen our puppy to family bonds.

Thanks for the names, advice and kind words/thoughts.

62. Locally-owned pet stores can have puppymil puppies...
Edited on Thu Jul-07-05 01:17 PM by youspeakmylanguage
I would never purchase an animal larger than a ferret from a pet store of any kind. Are you friends with the owner of the store?w

I hope your puppy survives. If he doesn't, I would recommend Petfinder.
