ER gripe!
Edited on Wed Jul-06-05 10:40 PM by purr
Just brought hubby home from the ER. He had excrutiating pain right above his belly button and today at work it was spreading around his back. So I met him at work and took him to the best hospital in town.

They did blood work and urine tests and all came back negative.. She gave him a GI drink and it helped a LITTLE.. Pain was still bad in his back (not muscular) and she said that she thinks its his gall bladder but couldnt ??!?!??! give him an ultrasound because there were no techs in the hospital and they only do ultrasounds during the day.

ARGH. So.. we basically wasted the er staff and our time by going up there for nothing. Her diagnosis? Gastritis. Hes pale as a ghost, clammy, and still in pain and she couldnt do a thing. This is supposed to be a top 100 hospital in Pa :(

I feel so bad.. Hes in horrible pain and sent him home with a script for Pepcid and if the pain gets worse to come back in. Sigh..

(Not asking for med advice just bitchin here!)

What if I went in with pregnancy problems and they had to find out the position/status of the baby? I'm sure they wouldve found a tech and that really made me upset.

They even put a IV line in 'just in case'... Poor guy feels horrible and I feel like a bigger ass for insisting he go to the ER to get checked.

1. Is there another ER that could do the ultrasound?
I nearly lost my grandfather to a gall bladder when I was in high school. Nothing to play around with!

2. Did they at least get a chest x-ray and EKG?
You might be able to detect things like a heart attack or dissection of the aorta with those simple kind of tests...

Physicians Assistant (not dissing the PA's but I think in a case like this the Physican should've seen him). Hes been having this pain since yesterday about 5ish and it gets worse when he eats but its constantly there.

7. Thats what I thought..
I was admitted for heart palpitations for overnight observation and nothing was wrong. he should've been admitted for observation and a scheduled ultrasound in the AM.

5. Take him to another hospital
That's what I'd do. Life is way to fragile and they haven't done all the test and tell them to give him something for pain. Be a bitch about it.

8. I have some percocet from when I had my daughter but he didnt want it..
Took a nexium off of my mom to see if that'll help. I REALLY hope its nothing serious or that hospital will be in deep shit. I thought about taking him to the other hospital in town but he just wanted to go to bed. We were there from 830-11 and nothing much was done :(

9. If he's pale and clammy
he has something wrong...blood work etc none the less. Do you have a blood pressure cuff...or know someone who does. I hope he doesn't get worse...but make him go back in the morning.

11. I agree. I thought it was his gallbladder when I took him up there.
His BP was 125/85 pulse 95 and his temp was 99.6 which that right there says something else is going on IMO.

I'm calling my primary care doc who would bend over backwards for me and getting him in ASAP for an ultrasound.

If its something viral which out of the possible scenarios I hope it is, I'm going on 8 months pregnant and I dont think taking a chance on whatever it is. I dont want to be having this baby while hes undergoing emergency gallbladder surgery or what have it be.

I cant sleep I'm worried.. he looked at me at the hospital and said "wow you really do care a lot dont you?" Told him I wouldnt have picked him up if i didnt..

This PA that seen him, saw my 2 yr old daughter that came down with the rotavirus a few months ago. Said she just had an upset stomach.. a pediatrician came in took one look at my daughter and admitted her. Spent 2 days in the hospital because she was severely dehydrated and needed IV fluids - couldnt keep a teaspoon of water down.

I hope this isnt bad :(

12. Hes fast asleep right now..
I'll check on him a ton tonight to make sure hes ok. She said that his white blood cell counts are normal and if there was an infection they would've been elevated. I think something is giving and I dont think they took all necessary steps to find why hes this way right now.
