Well, that's it. It's over.
Some of you might remember my thread about my company being bought out last Friday. God knows I've used you guys as a huge crutch lately, sorry you've had to listen to me bitch. Yesterday was one of the hardest days I've had in my 19 years of existence.

Basically, I have until September 30th at this job (that's IF they don't get us transitioned out sooner) then I get three months severance pay. If we're transitioned before 9/30, I'll be let go sooner, but will still get severance until December. The last day I work, my insurance is gone. The way we found out was pretty shitty. Apparently there was an e-mail circulating among administrators of the 70 offices to be shopping for an outside service (leaving us in the dust). When a staff member called yesterday morning to wish me the best of luck, I was flabbergasted. As far as we knew, things were still up in the air. They had two women from the new company personally fly up to talk to my boss first, then us individually.

I know that this sort of thing happens everyday, and I'm not trying to take away from those that have gone through it. It's just so hard. This was the first job I've ever had and I've been here for 3 years. I still haven't completed my GED yet, and I just feel so vulnerable right now.

1. good luck in your search
one thing though, if you need healthcare insurance, make sure you continue with COBRA. Yes, it will cost you, but it will hopefully be a short bridge until you find another job

2. I'm sorry
Can you get COBRA to extend your insurance? You might have to pay, but with the severance pay you may be able to afford it. I'd look into this - it might give you some comfort to know you could extend your insurance until you find a new job.

Good luck and I hope you find a new job soon!

19. Indeed.
Under COBRA you have 31 days to rollover your group plan into an individual plan.

(I just passed my health/life/accident/casualty insurance licence exam yesterday :P)

6. Don't worry, things will turn out fine
When things get rough the best thing to do is not worry. Just go out there and do what you know how to do. I'm sure you don't need me to tell you this but it's what I can do to hopefully make you feel a little better. :hi:

7. yeah, hang in there
It'll work out ok. I can tell by your writing voice you are an intelligent person, so I'm sure you won't have any trouble getting your GED. There are lots of programs on a local level that can help you get that. Some pay, others just offer free services, but just work hard and get it done. From there, the sky is the limit!

I know things like this are tough and it isn't fair. Just keep at it and keep being you.

At this point, I don't know where things are headed. It's kind of hard to look past this ending right now.

13. one thing that I know about is that you think quickly
and you land on your feet ... now that you know what is going to happen ... you can start making real plans with a target date ... if there is nothing that your area has to offer you then it's time to move on

16. Very sorry to hear about your bad news Blondie
Is there any other career you have been wanting to pursue? This might be a good time to try something new.I wouldnt move to a new city without having a job waiting for you.Ive made that mistake myself.

If you havent already I would get started at looking for another job, maybe you will find something better! :)

It also doesnt hurt to get some recommendations from your boss or bosses. You have been steadily employed for 3 years which is a plus.

I know its hard but try to stay positive. You will get through this.

17. Big hugs to you, dude
Finding this kind of stuff out is never fun, or easy, even when it's expected. I know we ended up going 7 months without insurance when I went back to my last job, waiting the 6 months for it to kick in. COBRA is good, but can be prohibitively expensive.

Good luck with the job-hunting, and trying to get up to Boston. You can set up resume searches on Monster and it will email you any new matches. You could do one for your area and one for Boston, and then just keep sending out resumes, as a start.

Good luck dude, give me a call if you want to vent, ok?

20. I feel your pain, 3 times over
At one place I was laid off from, they even called us at home the night before to inform us we were out of a job, as there were so many let go.

I'm 39 and have been laid off 3 times. It's never fun. Ultimately you always get back on your feet, so hang in there. I'm sure you can get your insurance extended through COBRA at relatively low cost, if you haven't found work by then.

Hang in there!

22. Sorry to hear this -- it sucks
At least you have warning -- when I was laid off in 2001 it was without any warning, my health insurance ended that day, my flex money ended that day (they kept what I didn't use) and instead of the 14 weeks of severance I was entitled to because of my 14 years of service, they changed the severance policy TWO DAYS PRIOR and I only got 3 weeks. I did get to cash out my unused vacation time. The good news was I did get a new job within 6 months where I still am.

Good luck on your job search. The advantage is you can start looking now and know you have an income through the end of the year before you start collecting unemployment.
