What does "w00t" mean?
I'm a newbie at g33ksp34k or whatever it is called...

Surely it means more than "woot!" such as a sound you make when cheering on a baseball team or farting...

8. And Here's More Background
Leet is the all-alpha translation of "l33t" (the "3" is represented as a backwards "E"), broken down as "l" and "33t," and thus "elite....

The word itself is derived phonetically from the word "elite"...intended principally to bypass automatic text parsers, perhaps because the originators of the convention felt they may be under some form of surveillance, or desired for other reasons to have somewhat private conversations in public spaces — hence the term elite, as only those 'in the know' could easily read what was said (perhaps in an online chat forum, for instance).

Maybe it is a reference to pawn shops.

13. pwned
Either comes from a Warcraft or Quake map.

I've heard the same story for both, so who knows. Anyway, a map designer misspelled the word "Owned" in the map, as a result when you died you would get the message "(player name) has been pwned" instead of "(player name) has been owned".

Small typo by a designer, but pervasive enough that it has managed to worm its way into all online gaming language.

15. I heard once it was based on "Way Out Of Town!"
an old time exclamation, but I'm not sure how true that is. If I'm right I win the big prize though!

18. WOOT and PWNED are generally agreed on as type-os.
Edited on Thu Jul-07-05 11:39 AM by aden_nak
woot being a type-o of root (because when you log into a system as root, you have complete and total power over that system) and pwned being a type-o of owned, for more obvious reasons.

Wiki has entries, which I only partially agree with. I find their linking woot to "Whoot! There it is!" to be tenuous at best.
