Does anybody remember the 70's seasonal variety shows?
At least some were seasonal...like the "Very Special Carpenters Christmas"...as well as weekly ones like "Brady Bunch Variety Hour","The Tony Orlando Show" and who could forget "Pink Lady and Jeff"?

Sigh...these shows were all bad. Very bad. They would start off with a storyline, a live audience and people breaking out into song every so often. They would have Vegas-style dancers, big rising staircases and the backdrops were always brightly lit with shadow art.

Scarily, these things are coming back - last Christmas Jessica Simpson did one, and I think Clay Aiken did one too.

The horror....the horror...

1. The Summer Brothers Smother's Show..
For the whole summer.

The King Family specials? Roy Rogers and Dale Evens special?

But then, I think I've gone back to the 60s.

2. My mother LOVED those.
Perry Como Christmas.... Bing Crosby too... I actually SAW the one where Bing sang "Little Drummer Boy" with David Bowie. I didn't think much of it at the time, because I was small, but looking back, it's a total :wtf: moment.

3. Sid and Marty Krofft
the mad geniuses of the 70's.

The incredible thing is that reportedly the Krofft brothers did NOT do drugs. :wow:

4. Mad geniuses of the 70's
True enough indeed...besides doing some seriously whacked kids shows (HR Pufnstuf, Sigmund the Sea Monster, etc.) they also did Variety shows like the Mandrell Sisters and the aforementioned Brady Bunch shows.

Amazing they didn;t do drugs - but Zappa didn't do drugs either, and 2000 Motels would make you think differently
