What irritates me more than my political opponents
Are those who appear to be on the same side as i am, but make such bad, or insane, arguments that it discredits the very point I'm trying to make to begin with.

Agree or disagree?

1. I agree that this irritates you more than do your political opponents.

Aw, come on; it's the Lounge.

Yes. It's annoying and embarrassing when those on the same side of an argument say such absurd things. I guess I'm not looking to determine which annoyance in my life holds the edge over all the others.

4. Bingo.
Sometimes the opposition will hang itself given enough rope, but they get a free pass when some dufus on my side makes them look credible by offering stupid irrational arguments.

5. Completely agree
When people start making wild arguments, it makes me look like an idiot for agreeing with them. Then, people just stop bothering to listen at all

6. I just have one really big glowy red button
I hate it when people put words in my mouth. I don't get homicidal the first time, but after I have clarified and they continue, the gloves come off.

What really gets me is that these are supposedly rational people who are supposed to be mostly on the same side, benefit of doubt, etc., who start behaving like everything I find abominable about the other side, and usually over something utterly, inanely, trivial.

yeah, I get it.

Both sides of the American left/right political paradigm have their lunatic fringe. It doesn't make either's core political philosophy less valid.

8. Do you mean the people who disagree with you on a few issues?
Edited on Thu Jul-07-05 12:04 PM by Rabrrrrrr
That is, they aren't "truly" liberal if they disagree with you on anything?

Or do you mean the ones who agree with you, but came to their conclusions through wild gymnastics of non-logic that make them look like fucking morons?

I'm assuming you mean the latter. If so, I agree with you, because veal is icky is because life is sacred, so that's why we have to save abortion as an option for women who are oppressed by men, because all men suck.

Seriously, though, if the latter, then yes, I agree with you. I've known a few people who were agree on things, but the path they take to get there is so bizarre, I can't understand it, and the kind of path that if they were to talk to, say, a conservative, the conservative is gonna totally write them off - not because of the truhfulness of the position, but because of the insanity of the argument to get there. And then I cringe because I think, "Gosh - this position is already tough enough for others to accept or listen to; but if this idiot opens their mouth, our cause is entirely lost".

9. If your point can be discredited, are those arguments really that
insane after all?

12. If we could all debate on a purely intellectual level
then you would have a point.

Unfortunately, people are mostly ruled by feelings. So, when somebody tries to embrace an idea I support in a manner that is viscerally repulsive, i find little chace of acceptance from the opposition trying to argue the same idea on a more rational level.

18. It depends on the argument. We all have
differences of opinions on varying issues. I, for one, am glad there is a variety of us dems out there.
