Non-work cell phones in the office...
What is your opinion of them?

Their numbers have multiplied here in my office - and through the day, I can hear 5 different phones ringing out of the 20 or so people that are in here.

1. We have an "extortion fund" for things like that.

It's a fineable offense if cell rings in office

From an actual email:
$.25 cell phone ring during business day
x 4 for ringing with sweet home Alabama
x 2 for ringing loud enough that Josh could even hear it
$ 2.00 grand total

whole office getting to rock out to Sweet Home Alabama PRICELESS!

3. I particularly enjoy having someone stop by my office
to waste my time, then, when a cell rings down the hall, having the idiot who stopped by interrupt our conversation to go talk to their sister about that evening's jello salad. :eyes:

12. thanks..
just a reminder when people talk about cell phone jammers (which AFAIK are still illegal in USA) for movie theaters or what not.. that there is a valid reason that I need to be able to get a cell call at any time. (I do silence the phone, it would just light up)

14. Very good point. And... as a single mother of a teenager, I would argue
that there are other valid reasons as well. Yours obviously a HUGE reason. I think the blanket assumption that everyone talks on cell phone cuz they think they are 'hot shit' is ridiculous.

Again, best wishes to you and your wife...

6. Thank goodness they are allowed 100% in my office...
Everyone has a cell phone, and I'm glad we're allowed to use them. I still can't understand why some people are obsessed against them... sure, I understand it is annoying at the theater or a show, but jeez...

8. My rule is...
...if it's going to ring, it had better be attached to you. Someone who leaves the phone sitting around to ring unanswered is just asking for it to be hidden in one of his desk drawers, for example.

I am not your secretary. Don't make me listen to your kewl ring tone.

9. I have like a symphony of "Play that Funky Music White Boy" in my office
seems several phones are set to that obnoxious ringtone. I currently have "Interstate Love Song" on my ring but I keep it quiet enough plus my friends/family know not to call unless it's an emergency

11. I think people
should be allowed to have them, but I can imagine that the ring-tones would get out of hand. People should turn their phones on vibrate or something.

13. I'm fine with the phones - but the ring tones are annoying as hell
I'm hoping it is just a fad, and leaves us soon. I don't have a cel phone, but I suppose I'll end up with one sooner or later - if only as a good thing to have if the car breaks down. It seems I'm the only one at the office who does not talk on the phone half the day.

15. What is so difficult about putting your cell phone on vibrate?
Edited on Fri Jul-08-05 02:51 PM by grace0418
How come no one at my office can seem to do that? I do that and no one knows when I get a call except me. I keep it in my pocket so I can feel it when it buzzes. Actually I keep my phone on vibrate 99% of the time. That way I don't have to worry about forgetting to turn it off at a play and embarrassing my self. Of course, maybe those people who's phones ring loudly at work (and everywhere else for that matter) don't find that embarrassing.

16. I have a cube near the window
which means everyone on the floor comes and stand outside my cube to talk on their cell, because 'the reception is better over here'.

highly annoying.

19. No issues, except ONE! The "my" phone logic disconnect.
People who will not usually talk about very personal issues on an office phone two feet from their elbow, will talk about the most private, disturbing, emotional, and WAY too much information subjects on their cell at the desk.

I can't explain it. A study needs to be done, because at the firm I was at, I was treated with a fundamentalist and his marriage breakdown at fifteen minute intervals. On a cell. With his wifes calling back to hang up on him with his chirpy bird ring on high so he could hear it from the printer.

20. I know my opinion will be unpopular....but....
I think cel phones at work are no different than personal posting on line at work or personal calls at work.

Unless there is an emergency I don't think professional time should be wasted doing personal things. There are breaks and lunch to make/take calls and surf the internet.

Flame away....

21. No flames here. People playing violent games on the network..
pisses me off. At lunch you hear whoops and hollers, and a chirpy bird cell phone ringing because the husband is too busy playing.
