... Iron N Wine, Nick Drake, Mike Doughty ... and I've really been diggin' on Blue Merle (although they have a little bit o'bluegrass in 'em) ...

Keane is pretty good, as is Citizen Cope.

7. Get an Etta Baker CD

The latest one (only her third) is with Taj Mahal.

Piedmont blues on acoustic guitar, all instrumental.

Etta is 93 years old and has been playing guitar since she was 3. They say that a field recording made of her playing in 1956 influenced practically every folk guitar player of the 60s. :wow: Some of those recordings are included on this CD.

She is living musical history. You will not regret it.

After a lengthy sabattical spent contemplating Jesus, the never-less-than-mighty Moose return with their 4th and most perfectly-formed album (and their first North American release since their brush with Virgin Records and their tour of the USA with The Cocteau Twins). "High Ball Me" is an as-near-as-dammit realisation of the perrenial Moose fixations of classic 60s / 70s pop, heart shredding country & western, stellar songwriting (of the Nillson / Hazelwood school), and borderline-melodic guitar mangling. The amalgam of these influences is one of the best and most diverse pop albums of the century so far, and the greatest record the House of Love never managed to make despite always threatening to. What a beautiful album this is! If I had read about the different sounds and influences on this recording prior to hearing it, I wouldn't have thought it would work. How in the hell could bongos, goofy organ sounds and spaghetti-western guitar melodies go together with dark and moody British guitar pop? I know it sounds bizarre, but these influences meld together seamlessly on this album.

Moose's "High Ball Me!" simply has to be heard to be believed. Not only for its off-kilter amalgamation of diverse influences, but for the sheer quality of the songwriting contained within. This is pop music of the absolute highest order. Each song on this album has been meticulously and painstakingly crafted with so much love and attention to detail it is staggering. You can tell that the bandmembers of Moose are truly in love with the artistic possibilities of pop music and revel in writing and recording (why else would they continue doing it when obviously no one knows who they are?). It is truly a shame that this album has been completely overlooked by the media and music fans alike (they have no idea what they're missing!)...

ROGUE WAVE Rogue Wave began almost by accident. In early 2002, faced with the sort of existential crisis unique to the newly unemployed, Zach Rogue decided to take some time off from his home base of San Francisco. He set off with a one-way ticket to New York in March with the intention of recording one or two songs with a friend, in an effort to exorcise his demons both artistically and personally. He came away with both a new lease on life and an album’s worth of material that would later become Rogue Wave’s debut, Out of the Shadow. After returning to the Bay Area with a nearly completed record in hand, Zach decided to leave his former band Desoto Reds and form his own group. At the end of 2002, while preparing the album for release, Zach rounded out band’s lineup with the addition of Pat Spurgeon (drums/keys/samples/vocals), Sonya Westcott (bass/vocals), Gram LeBron (guitar/keys/vocals). Zach soon realized that together the group started to “light up like fireworks” and “liked hugging each other.” Effortless friendship spawned their freshingly organic actualization of Rogue Wave, a band whose commitment to song-craft and to each other is nothing short of astounding

14. Folky acoustic rock...

I highly recommend Bright Eyes' "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" album. Maybe some Elliott Smith too. "Figure 8" is my favourite of his albums.

Sam Roberts' "We Were Born In A Flame" is excellent as well.

Wintersleep's 2003 self-titled album is another good one. Their new album, also self-titled, is good, but not as acoustic as the first.
