Did any of your schools actually have dunce caps?
I think the days of the dunce cap had passed when I was a kid. Good thing, too.

2. I know!
We missed out on the opportunity that Dubya had of being the dunce. I think that significantly decreases our chances of every being President.

We had to stand in the corner..or god forbid, walk around a small square area of pavement a certain number of times.

We actually made a dunce cap once for our boss, affectionately known as "the Little Dunce" ever since he tried to get our art director to do errands for him on her lunch hour, and she looked down at him (she's tall, he's not) and said, "No, I won't do it, you little dunce!"

She didn't get fired, either. We did hide the dunce cap in a file cabinet...

edit: previous boss, many jobs and five time zones ago

6. No, but
Sister Martha Marie at St Columba in North Philly in the early 60's had one helluva right hand which she used to pound heads on desks and slap cheeks extremely hard. I believe she was about 90 at the time but I doubt she is dead. She was too mean to die. She was much more effective than a dunce cap. I think bush would have turned out much better if he spent a year with the lovely and talented Martha Marie.

9. Sister Martha Marie
slapped the pee out of me one spring morning in 1966 because I was giggling because another student couldn't do his math problem. She kicked my ass because of him. I remember it as if it were yesterday. At that time, there was zero disciplinary problems in parochial schools.

11. We had The Bench
When you were naughty, you got sent to the Principal's office and he would lecture you then make you sit on The Bench. It was horribly feared by all. I finally had my turn in fourth grade over some stupid infraction and I was so petrified - then I went to the office and Mr. Miller, our principal was such a nice person, he wasn't the least bit intimidating. He spoke to me and sent me to The Bench and it was just ... a bench. Big deal. I sat there and daydreamed for however long it was I was sent there for and then went back to class. But I never got sent there again.

In the lunchroom, we had the Training Table, which was where you got sent if you were horsing around in the lunchroom. What a great name! Training Table. LOL
