Computer Geeks: Question

And I mean "Geek" in the most endearing sense imaginable.

I bought a new computer. P4, a billion MhZ. Divx9. But "Far Cry" still locks up my computer right when I start to run it.

WTF am I doing wrong?

Whoever solves this gets a free lunch.

Far Cry is a very needy game in terms of video card.

Start

add hardware
it will ask if you have already installed
answer yes
at the top of the next list will be your video card

Go to start/control panel/display

Click on the settings tab. You should see something like this.


You can see that here I can tell that I have a GeForce 6800 series vid card.

Now click the advanced tab. You should see more tabs pop up. One of the tabs is the name of your vid card or company that made it. Click that tab and depending the drivers that the manufacturer has produced, you should see something like this with all sorts of info. Here you can tell which drivers you are running and compare the numbers to the card manufacturers site to see if you are up-to-date.



And there is a patch for Far Cry as has already been stated. Make sure you get that one too.

8. Hey! That SORTA worked

I mean at least the game doesn't lock up for me now, at least right away. But the trees are still the same colour as the ocean (blue) as my boat cruises into the island. And then of course I can't exit my boat, but that's probably my own ignorance as far as the controls go. But I feel I'm halfway home! Thx a million.

9. If it is a color issue

I am almost positive it is a vid card driver issue. This would be very easy to fix, if you could figure out what vid card you have so we could direct you to the right place to find the drivers. Also, make sure you are running the latest of DirectX from Mico$oft.

11. That is one of those on-board video solutions

Basically your Graphics Processing Unit is on your motherboard. And I am sorry to say that it won't run a graphics intensive game like Far Cry. However, there are plenty of solutions for you. All you have to do is pick up a good video card that you place in your AGP slot or even PCI slots. There are newer version cards like the one of mine that you see in the pic above, but I don't know if you are willing to spend that much.

Right now, though, we need to find out what sort of motherboard you have to proceed. And BTW, that chipset family is for the Celeron family of processors. Do you have a Celeron or do you have a Pentium 4? I know you said P4, but with that graphics solution, it got me wondering.

Edit: Found some more info. That GPU usually comes with PCI Express motherboards which means you have a recently made motherboard which in terms of computers means the past 6 months. Knowing you have a PCI Express board, I would recommend the following for Far Cry:

Look through these cards and any others you like such as ones from ATI. I like Nvidia though, personal choice. I would get one that is PCI Express since you have the slot. Choose the one in your price range.

There aren't enough patches/updates in the world I can d/l to run Far Cry? F*#K!!! I thought buying a computer in 2005 would bring me up to speed w/ what the kids are running these days.

You just need to upgrade that on-board video to a stand alone video card. Really, it's not that big of a deal, but I can understand the frustration of having to spend more money. Sorry.

2. Have you updated your audio and video drivers?

Just because your computer is new, that doesn't mean it came with the latest drivers. The audio card/video card manufacturer's web sites will have the latest drivers.

It's been my experience that whenever a game locks up, it's usually a driver problem. :-)

On edit: Make sure your video card is compatible with the game (the game's web site should have a list of incompatible hardware)

On thing ... I hope you have a REAL video card (self-contained, removable) and not a "card" that's built into the motherboard because a high-end game like Far Cry probably won't run with an integrated card. :-(

13. Here's the support ticket from Intel :)

I like nvidia too, but I just bouhght a brand new dell with an ATI, because of the problems that NVIDIA was having with Battlefield 2.

ALSO, Intel has a support article about far cry on that chipset.
Looks like you need to get a patch from the game manufacturer.
