Stone, Cage to Team Up on Film About 9/11
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050709/ap_on_en_mo/film_stone_cage

<snip>
NEW YORK - Nearly four years after the collapse of the World Trade Center, Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone will direct a film based on the story of two police officers who were trapped in the rubble on Sept. 11, 2001.

Nicolas Cage, who won a best-actor Oscar for "Leaving Las Vegas," will star as Port Authority police Sgt. John McLoughlin. McLoughlin and fellow officer William J. Jimeno became trapped during rescue efforts after the collapse of the twin towers.

Paramount Pictures said the movie is expected to be released next year.

"It's a work of collective passion, a serious meditation on what happened and carries within a compassion that heals," Stone said in a statement Friday. "It's an exploration of heroism in our country — but it's international at the same time in its humanity."

Sorry, but I won't be seeing this because of Cage. I don't think the man can act his way out of a paper bag.

14. Oliver Stone is no typical Hollywood director
I would expect this film to be much more controversial than it sounds from this article. Oliver Stone is no Bush fan, and I would expect that he is going to cause some Freepers heads to explode with this one. If it were any other director I would be scared, but Oliver Stone is not afraid to speak his mind. I have faith that he will do this one right.

2. Oliver Stone hasn't done a good movie for a while.
I'm not that big of a Nic Cage fan.

As for the 9/11 thing, I'm sure someone will get mad....plus, it's too soon.

11. Horrible in National Treasure too
I've never really had an opinion about Cage one way or the other, but I thought his acting was pretty bad in that movie.

4. If you don't think Cage can act, I suggest checking out Wild At Heart...
And Adaptation.

Cage can act, he just needs a good director to coax a quality performance out of him.

5. Sorry, I guess I should've clarified that better.
In the movies I've seen with Cage in them, he hasn't been able to act his way out of a paper bag.

But I think you're right, a lot of it has to do with the director.

8. I'll agree that most of the time he sucks

But since becoming a self-proclaimed film nerd, I've seen many shitty actors give great performances when a good director is involved. That said, I'm not familiar enough with Stone to be able to predict how this will turn out.

9. He was better in Raising Arizona than he's been in anything else he's
done. IMO. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it :smoke:

Other than that, if I could go around being filmed twitching and yelling "A-Hole!" for 20 million dollars a pop, I'd be a very happy man.

7. Yeah... I'm not interested either.
Oliver Stone and 9/11.
Boy, the insane right will love that combination.

Last good movie Cage made was "Raising Arizona" which I watched last night, and it still almost makes me pee my pants it's so funny.

13. Yeah, Hollywood's full of LIBERALS!
They'll boycott it unless Mel Gibson's in it.

Oliver Stone is certainly not right-wing, far from it. I would expect he is aiming to make people look at 9/11 in a whole new way, and not in the way that the right-wing wants us to look at it. I would normally be hesitant of a 9/11 film, but I think it looks like this one is in good hands.

12. This could be good
Remember that Oliver Stone has always been a thorn in the side of the establishment. I would not expect this to be a pro-Bush movie in any way shape or form, in fact I expect it will be a highly controversial movie that will make the Freepers go insane. Oliver Stone has not made very many movies recently, but I still have faith that he still can pull this off. Remember JFK, Salvador, Born on the Fourth of July, and Platoon? Those were some of the greatest films of my time, and I hope this one will live up to the potential that it has.
