Bagdad Batteries - Alternative Energy
Not about the oil, its about the Batteries...
The ancient battery in the Baghdad Museum, as well as those others which were unearthed in Iraq, are all dated from the Parthian occupation between 248 BCE and 226 CE. However, Dr. Konig also found copper vases plated with silver in the Baghdad Museum, excavated from Sumerian sites in southern Iraq, dating back to at least 2500 BCE. When the vases were lightly tapped, a blue patina or film separated from the surface, which is characteristic of silver electroplated onto copper base. It would appear then that the Parthians inherited their batteries from one of the earliest known civilizations.

1. What would a person
need a battery for in 2500 BCE or even 248 BCE?

2. Not for light thats for sure
Gilding, Electroplating coins and such.

They recreated it just now on Mythbusters, they made a series of 10 or so ceramic silver and copper batteries using vinegar, and wired them up to a replica "arc of the covenant" they were able to get 10,000 volts, even though it was very low amps. It shocked the hell out of them, the theory was that the electricity was used as part of a religious ceremony.
In as much as the "wrath of God" would certainly be felt, if you touched metal that was wired up to these batteries.

The screwball claims that you could make a lamp with these was what discredited alot of people who came up with reasons for egyptian batteries.
