It was treated for the most part on a light-hearted level, and it worked well enough to get me through the flick without losing my interest. As is usual with such things, the SFX carried it-- when it comes to reading a comic book out loud, Shakespearean acting just isn't required, and it wasn't present. Stan Lee slightly overdid his usual cameo-- they made the mistake of actually giving him a couple lines, and it was a couple too many for me. It was a momentary distraction.
Michael Chiklis did okay (outside his "Shield" persona), but the others came off as either slightly uncertain or simply paranoid. Jessica Alba made an adequate Sue Storm, but Ioan Gruffudd made an entirely too freaked out Reed Richards. Chris Evans was a hoot as Johnny Storm (The Human Torch), but almost everything he did was as comic relief. And for some reason, Doctor Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon) didn't convince me to be scared of him at all.
All in all, I'd still prefer a good Iron Man or Silver Surfer flick be made, but this will be a good one for the (older) kiddies in the meantime.
Perhaps they'll release another X-Men soon? One can hope...
