3. They are a threat.
Their use of pot turns innocent teenagers into sex crazed junkies. I cite "Reefer Madness" as an example of what such unholy debauchery can lead to.

They had no real politics.
And I hate patchouli, too.

10. I'm apprehensive about the flower children
I'm a Christian socialist, and I can't abide their hedonism; still, I find their gentility endearing.

but being the spawn of former patchouli soaked pot heads, I can say that the fucked up names they give their kids (and I speak from intimate experience) can lead to childhood trauma. Also, the only form of rebellion available to us was conservatism! Prime example is my freeptard ditto head brother.

12. I love the hippies.
Although I think, sadly, the flower power movement led to the birth of the neo-conservative backlash, which is why we're in the position we are today.

19. I am so saddened, and disappointed by the responses to this thread . . .
which reflect total ignorance of the forces at work in the 60's. The themes of brotherly love and peace won and carried through the 70's. They even carried through most of the 80's and 90's in the way they shaped our culture and lower levels of government. They still exist at many local levels.

The Bush administrations have been geared toward destroying everything for which the 60's stood, including, by way of broad example, creating a second "Vietnam" in the Middle East just to signal, "Fuck You, Hippies" to anyone who understands the 60's.

I see that my time has come and gone.

Goodbye.

20. Please note: No one here is denigrating resistance to war/poverty/racism

In my four years at the DU, I can't recall reading one post that was hostile to the efforts of the Freedom Riders. Or SNCC. Or SDS (Students for a Democratic Society). Or the Catholic Left.

It is the culture of the flower children some of us have issues with. However primeval this may sound to you, I confess I find nothing laudable about mind-altering narcotics, or promiscuity, or stunts like the Yippies' attempt to raise the Pentagon by way of telekinesis. When I watch the documentary "Woodstock," for example, I see a cadre of drug-addled children who couldn't find their own feet, let alone serve as non-violent soldiers against American empire.

Sorry, but I'm too devastated by my country's barbarism to buy into "flower power." Sobriety suits me fine.

21. Sobriety is the way to go brother....
in thought...

We live in sobering times......

The idealism of the mid sixties to the early 70's was dashed and destroyed by the harsh reality of the world around us...

But still, there are many of us who still live by the simple pledge that Jesus, the man not the godhead, talked about and many many hippies picked up upon, Treat your neighbor as you would have him treat you.....

What's so bad about feeling good about feeling good....

23. I agree, but with a caveat or two
Edited on Sun Jul-10-05 02:22 AM by DerekG
"Free love", a phrase often synonymous with wanton promiscuity, should not be confused with the Christ consciousness you make reference to. Confusing eros with agape (universal love) would be a grave mistake.

Accordingly, LSD should not be a necessity for experiencing the soul's liberation. Education and/or spiritualism is more than enough.

24. I agree whole heartily....
I gave up the concpet of brotherly love for the weed and the Wine...

I found that although the physical love you find persuing that route can be gratifying in it's way, it is in no way satisfying in the spiritual sense....

It wasn't until I truly looked beyond myself that I saw the way to a life fullfilled....

Now I am not a jesus freak but I do subscribe to his teachings....

But I love to have fun ad I take advantage of all that life has to offer.....

After all, we live in the temperal plane

27. Please understand I'm not advocating asceticism
There is a stark difference between promiscuity and the sensuous love radiating in the hearts of the lover and his/her beloved.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using spirits or marijuana to unwind; the danger comes with dependency.

Peace.

26. I am more than acquainted with the forces that were at work in the 60's.
There is no denying the impact of the music and politics of the time. There was a free press then, too. There was also an alternative press, which DU, Daily Kos and others now represent.
It just seemed to me that the hippie movement was way too apolitical and naive. There were other forces at work, and I mean real work.

I also meet a lot of people who are trying to reinvent the era, patchouli and all, and all I want to say to them is, "Get your own era. Here it is now. Do something."

25. Apparently so
At least according to this editorial in The Economist

SIR – America must be careful not to let Iraq turn into another Vietnam and so help regenerate the lowliest scum of the human race that brought about the worst cultural period in American history. Hippie clothing (those long, trashy skirts) and peace signs are already making a comeback. God, please let it stay at that before I have enough and move to Europe.

:wow:

I rather hope the hippie craze comes back full-force and makes Mr. Ray fulfill his promise to move to Europe.
