Dennis compared to Camille
Edited on Sun Jul-10-05 07:38 AM by Maddy McCall
Camille:

WINDS: 190 mph
Pressure: 909 Mb
Surge: 22 - 25 feet above Mean Tide.

Dennis:

WINDS: 145 mph (with gusts to 180 MPH)
Pressure: 931 Mb.
Surge: 15+

***********
7 AM Update: Latest hurricane recon showed a pressure drop to 931 mb, 1 mb lower than two hours ago. If Dennis comes ashore with that pressure, it would be the 7th most intense hurricane ever to strike the U.S. An additional pressure fall to 927 mb would rank it number four, behind only Camille, the 1935 Labor Day storm, and Andrew.

Dennis still looks on track for a an exact duplicate landfall where Hurricane Ivan hit along the Florida-Alabama border, just west of Pensacola. The storm surge from Dennis will be one the highest ever for the U.S., up to 15 feet in some locations. The all-time record is Hurricane Camilles's 24.6 feet. Expect extensive damage to the weakened dunes and beaches, new cuts opened all the way through barrier islands, and of course near-total destruction of all buildings where the 10-15 foot storm surge values occur. The tourist industry will take a very long time to recover in Pensacola.

4. I hope you're gone by the time I post this.
Did you stay up all night? I did. And at daybreak I went outside to clean up the fly-able stuff. Picked up a piece of wood and lo and behold a snake. I KILLED a FECKIN' WATER MOCCASIN!

It's already been a trying morning here. :scared:

Now YOU! Get the heck outta dodge!

7. Look, I just finished boarding up, I'm smelly & sweaty and
worn us, yes, I stayed up all night. I watched the sunrise, it was beautiful and it is still nice out, not beautiful, but nice. The storm is pulling the water out of the bay, you can see the current, the waves spiraling in his direction. It is really rather neat.

And now they just announced it is taking a northernly direction, more towards Destin.

Don't worry, I'm not staying, even though the neighbors are staying.

I'm just finishing up and getting out of dodge.

So be safe and I'll catch you on the other side of Dennis! :hi:

 thanks

5. Make like a sheepherder instead
And get the flock out of there.

Dennis is dangerous. We've been getting a glancing blow (Tampa Bay area) for the last 24 hours. Some strong bands, and a few tornados. Pouring rain right now.

We just took a little ride over to the beach, and the gulf is almost over the causeway in Tarpon Springs. Anclote River is very high, but we still have an offshore breeze.

10. SHIT! Another similarity with Camille! Dennis's track is moving west.
Latest NHC track is west of the earlier one. NOAA keeps moving it west, closer and closer to Camille's track.
