Favorite. Divas. Ever.
I get really swoony when I hear the likes of Annie Lennox, especially doing, "Would I lie to you?"

I love Diamanda Galas, too, doing her rendition of "I put a Spell on you".

And Kate Bush? She's not really known as a "Diva", but that voice is not from this world. Pick any song.

What say you, Diva-loving honeys?

3. That woman- I adore her.
There are so many singers who think they have powerful voices, and they may, but Annie Lennox has to live with hers. I mean that in a very positive way. What would I do if I had that voice? What a powerful woman.

48. My sisters aren't commercial performers.
One has been a middle-school teacher, and parish music manager, for about 30 years. She and another sister sing for Family gatherings and, of course, in their Churches, Though the teacher leads others, and designs productions, more than she performs.

I haven't looked Annie Lennox up in the INternet. I have cassettes, CDs, and maybe even a couple of LPs. Lost track of her for a while, but used to listen to her several times a day about 20 years ago.

She was/is ahead of her time.

10. HOLY SHIT.
You know, I know this is a childish sentiment, and forgive me for my timing, but I would like to know if maybe we could freeze her and keep her alive forever? I suspect that at some point, the RIGHT point, she could be allowed to go ahead and RULE THE WORLD. The M&Ms commercials could be something we could all enjoy as political levity, and the rest of her talent can be dispensed piecemeal among those who are worthy?

Are you with me on a "Freeze Karen" campaign?

Singin my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song x2
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

Yea yea yea do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do

I heard he sang a good song,
I heard he had a style,
And so I came to see him and listen for a while
And there he was this young boy
Stranger to my eyes
Singin my life with his words (two times, two times)
Killing me softly with his song x2
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

I felt all flushed with fever
Embarrased by the crowd,
I felt he found my letters and read each one out loud,
I pray that he would finish
But he just kept right on

Repeat chorus

Wooooooaaaa ohhhhhhhhhh laaaa la la la la la la ohhh la laaa woaaa laa
Aaaalaaaaaa

Repeat chorus until fade

in the role of Carmen in the film version of that Opera. She had a phenomenal voice, although probably not the VERY greatest range or power of her time. But she was also a fantastic and gorgeous actress and looked very bit the part of the Gypsy girl, playing opposite Placido Domingo. Apart from the incredible music and acting, the film version of Carmen, with its outdoor sets on location (not on the opera stage) is stunningly beautiful, one of my favorite films of all time.

75. "Just One of Those Things"
Billie did a great job with this Cole Porter classic:

Just One of Those Things

As Dorothy Parker once said to her boyfriend: "Fare thee well!"
As Columbus announced when he knew he was bounced: "It was swell, Isabelle, swell!
"As Abelard said to Heloise: "Don't forget to drop a line to me, please."
As Juliet cried in her Romeo's ear: "Romeo, why not face the fact, my dear?"
It was just one of those things,
just one of those crazy flings,
one of those bells that now and then rings,
just one of those things.
It was just one of those nights,
just one of those fabulous flights,
a trip to moon on gossamer wings, just one of those things.
If we'd thought a bit of the end of it when we started painting the town,
We'd have been aware that our love affair was too hot not to cool down.
So, goodbye, dear, and amen! Here's hoping we meet now and then.
It was great fun, but it was just one of those things!

God & hope, she was mean. We like divas but we really hate meanness. She was mean. She may have had that "listen to me voice" but she was mean. Mean Divas never rule the world. And our interest in freezing them wanes considerably the meaner they get. Do you see what I mean?

65. La Lupe

Wd be remiss if I did not post La Lupe, since she claimed to be devil-possessed during performance (reminding me of Diamanda, whom someone listed, and who, when I saw her, seemed quite possessed, if only by her fearsome performing self).

Side note: La Lupe owned a club in Madrid, not for from the Tavern of the Conspirators (north of the Paseo del Prado) called La Lupe, now owned and staffed by descendents of hers, including a very hot, tall barmaid who sold me, by my insistence over her objection, a tall glass of La Lupe, which is actually meant to be consumed in shots by a few friends.

I didn't finish my La Lupe, but I did dance happily, in prescient honor to Jimmy Jazz, to a dee-jayed "Hateful," from London Calling, as performed in tribute by No Doubt, the only recording by the latter group that I can halfway enjoy.

Time to cook the sockeye salmon, green beans, and rice, then. Too many words, as usual.
