Anyone else's cat a freak for cantelope?

He's the 2nd one I've had that freaked for it. So I would have to say that 2 out of 5 cats I've had did.

It has been my experience that cats love cantelope for some reason.

The 3rd one, the one that lets the kids carry him around like a baby, contentedly, sticks to catfood.

I got so tired of my holier-than-thou females being impatient with Beloved Daughter that, when Beloved Daughter was 5, we went to the cat lady's house, and, when we walked in, I turned to my hubby and said, "We are going for the one that doesn't run away. We did that.

The good news is that he is the PERFECT pet.

The other side of the coin is that we suspect that, although he is fully functional and the happiest individual on this Earth right now, he may be a bit intellectually-challenged (or maybe he just does not care).

6. My little buddy has never seen a cantelope,

but I wouldn't be surprised if he liked it. The only "people" food he ever begs for is salad greens. I am not kidding. I have actually watched him eat a small salad's worth of baby romaine.

37. We had a beautiful Turkish Angora tomcat

that loved crisp, cold salad greens. He would stick his big head right into my salad if I didn't share. He also would take my toothbrush from my bathroom in the morning and make me chase him for it.

47. Snowball was my daughters' b'day present

but he decided that I was his favorite. All white, one blue eye, one gold, what they call a "Tam" cat. Smart breed, and very playful.

44. They sell organic pots of wheat and/or rye grass at the pet stores...

...for little freaks like ours. I thought that would break him of his habit of begging for greens, but he still does it, and of course, I still give him what he wants.

On the upside, the wheat and rye grass doesn't make him barf. Everytime I have him outside and he eats grass, he's heaving ten minutes later.

8. My cocker spaniels, Emma and Libby, both love canteloupe...

does that count? Emma loves salad, of any sort, and papaya, mango, popcorn, and basically anything that is edible. Libby is much more discerning, and spits out a good deal of the delicacies that Emma enjoys.

I've taken to putting plastic lids on plastic 32-oz drinking cups, and adding a straw - so our drinks will be left alone.

My ocicat is the biggest baby I've ever had. All 20 lbs. of him.

We had a 26-pound big white American shorthair (now deceased).

Heck no! My 'baby' is a Persian!

My Ocicat - well you just verified it for me - she must have been the runt - she is only 10 lbs.

She is the temperamental one - smart as can be, though.

That is one beautiful cat you have!

And, then, there is my 19-year-old Persian - the Grand Dame - just keeps on going.

I've kept them all indoors; I just don't trust outdoors.

Don't feel too sorry for them - they have 4,700-square-feet to run around in.

35. Mine are indoors too.

The ocicat snuck out once though. He tore out the dryer vent hose from the dryer to outside and crawled out the hole. I had it hook up to a window. He came back (to eat). I moved from that place and now live on the 3rd floor of an apartment complex. It's not safe to let them out here. I've seen to many cats and other animals on the road. We also have a lot of coyotes in the area.

Good for you - keeping them indoors. We have coyotes out here in SoCal too.

Dot - that's my ocicat - well, once she threatened to nip Beloved Daughter and meow loudly at here. I told her, "We always treat the baby with respect! (the baby was several years old by then)."

She studied me.

Then, one time, I started getting a bit peeved at Beloved Daughter.

Dot gave me one warning. I ignored her. Then she gave me another - to treat the Baby with respect. I ignored Dot again. THEN I got nipped!

She always gets between me and Beloved Daughter, and looks at me like, "Treat the Baby with respect!"

She also carries Beloved Daughter's socks around during the day, meowing, when Beloved Daughter is at school (Beloved Daughter is 8; Dot is about 4).

She knows when pick up time is; I go get Beloved Daughter after that.

They are definitely smart cats.

15. Speaking of nuts...

Spike (cat) raided my sliced almonds the other evening.
"Hmm, momcat, what are you munching? I better have some.. Hey! These are pretty tasty. I better have some more. Don't bother, I'll just reach in and scoop some out..."

Spike is sorta odd. She also spent 8 hours carrying around a fresh beet. OK, with the root on, it did sorta resemble a dark red mouse.

21. My desert tortoise adores cantelope melon

It will eat 2 or 3 slices a day if I serve it. And it comes to the refrigerator if I don't serve it at the usual time. But it's a vegetarian. I'm surprised that a carnivore like a cat would even touch the stuff.

26. No, but turkey bacon, marshmallows and bubble wrap are fair game...

One of our cats goes **insane** for turkey bacon -- she even knows the sound of it being unwrapped...quietly!

Our other cat would make a model prisoner -- he can't get enough bread (preferably toast or bagels) and ice water (fun to play in, too). He likes to watch and listen to the bubbles in the bottled water cooler. Maybe we should have a replica Roman aqueduct installed for him! :crazy:

So I'll try it on him. My cat expressed an interest in carbs only when he was a kitten and even then this appetite was restricted to rye bread, blueberry muffins, and, of course, raspberry Newtons, a bag of which he managed to drag halfway upstairs before needing a nap.

34. Yes! My cat, Fud, will chew through the rind if you leave one out

We have to keep them in the refrigerator or outside when they're in season. He's been like that since he was a kitten (12 years old now). None of my other cats - or no others I've known for that matter - are into it. Thought it was some weird mutation in Fud. But he just goes cuckoo, as intently as if it was catnip, as if it were more a drug than a food to him. Too funny. I though Fud was the only one before now!

40. My theory:

it has the consistency-and almost the smell-of raw meat. Lots of cats love it, and it's OK for them to eat- so there's no harm in a bit of indulgence.
