So, who else loves a good movie villain?
I mean the GOOD ones, like Hannibal, the Queen of Diamonds and such. The ones that give the heebie jeebies because they are just eerie folks, rather than just coming in and slashing everything up with a big chainsaw. Although, I will say Christian Bale was interesting in American Psycho.

Real life bad guys suck, like * in the White House now. But the movie villians rock!

But not as good as the guys in the white hats.

2. I like over the top villians, a bit old fashioned.
Baron von Bombburst from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Terry Thomas is Magnificent Men and Thier Flying Machines, Auric Goldfinger in "Goldfinger" (Same actor as Bombburst. Hmmm.)

I like villians who seem to be evil for the sake of being evil.

Dialog between Bruce Willis' character, who just discovered the "terrorism" is really just cover for a theft, and Rickmans, who's insulted at being called "common."

Loved that exchange. :)

66. I think a great villain is even more important to the pic than a hero ...
Edited on Mon Jul-11-05 07:14 PM by Lisa
Christopher Lee did a remarkable job of laying it all out, in an essay more than a decade ago. He explained that in some ways, it's more interesting to portray the villain, because there are so many directions in which you can take the character. You can be the "bad guy" because you're forced into it by circumstance, or because you really believe you're doing the right thing -- because you hold a grudge against the hero, or because you're trying to accomplish your goals and s/he's getting in the way. There are angry, vengeful, pathetic, and truly unbalanced villains (think "Saw" or Inspector Morse's "The Last Enemy").

Some of my favourites are the scheming sorcerer in "The Thief of Baghdad", Tartuffe in Moliere's play of the same name, and Martin Sheen's character who threatens Jodie Foster in "The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane". (Sheen actually does some pretty memorable villains -- I really hope that the West Wing gig doesn't typecast him from now on.)

I think that * would be quite a good movie villain. Honestly, he's the answer to a writer's (and actor's) prayers. But I wouldn't be satisfied with him just being a moron ... I'd really want him to be more cunning (though he scores high in the manipulative, arrogant, and heartless departments). So if I were writing a screenplay for him, I'd probably have to merge his character with Karl Rove's. It wouldn't be much of a stretch, because they're both vindictive and a nice blend of pettiness with delusions of grandeur. The situations when he pretends to be a nice, kindly guy (and a cowboy, at that!) are so shoddy and yet so over-the-top that I'm sure a performer could run wild with them.

71. Nice post!
I loved Christopher Lee's performance in LOTR. I recently watched "Sleepy Hollow" which he had a part in. I notice that I seem to like the actors that Tim Burton casts. He always seems to chose those character actors who are just a little off. I have loved the films that Depp has done with him. I would like to see Depp play a deliberate bad guy. In Secret Window he was mentally ill, and there was duality. I just want to see him play a total bastard. Wasn't he a bad guy in "Once Upon a Time in Mexico"?
