Need help starting up Mozilla Firefox 1.0.4 (new download) ---
It's on the desktop but when I install and try to open, I get the gray "Alert" box saying "start.mozilla.org could not be found. Check name and try again."

I tried deleting and downloading again and got the same thing. Am on Windows XP & for the last year, the old Firefox has worked so well and so FAST. (I mean, for dial-up)

The first time I downloaded 1.0.4 there was a dialog box that asked "allow access? Not recommended" at one point, and I clicked "NO" -- is that where I screwed up?

and how do I get unscrewed? Life without Bookmarks is so empty! and i.e. is so slow! aargh! ......I.H.

1. have you tried their discussion board on their website? I have found
it to be very helpful as there doesn't seem to be a problem there that someone hasn't dealt with.

4. I peeked in over there
and immediately was intimidated and backed out. Will screw the old courage to the old sticking place, wherever that is, and once more into the breach..........thanks NVMojo

2. "Allow access?"
That's where you screwed up. You told the firewall not to permit Firefox access to the outside internet.

Why it said "Not recommended" is beyond me. Maybe a new Microsoft 'feature'?

3. Thanks for the reply!
I looked at that pop-up box really hard, because it said "Warning Program attempting outside access" or something and the choice I wanted definitely said "Not recommended" -- so I'll go search around the Mozilla/Firefox questions board and see what I can find -- I'm not the only old grandma on the internets and no doubt somebody else has made the same overly cautious ("chicken") mistake.

My gut was telling me I was doing the wrong thing at the time, but I am so afraid of getting Something Nasty (i mean BESIDES internet explorer)......

thanks cprise -- I.H.

5. ** Could a Windows user help her out??
She needs someone to explain to her how to unblock Firefox in her firewall.

I don't use Windows so I can't tell her the steps.

THANKS....

6. This is what you need to do
You definately blocked it yourself when you clicked that box. To enable Firefox you will need to manually tell the Windows firewall to allow it. It's easy don't worry. Here's the instructions for doing that.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842242#6

Just follow the directions under the header Enable programs by using Windows Firewall . Good luck!
