Waaaaaaaah! My DVD player broke! And in a weird way!
How weird is it?

It's so weird... it plays sound but not video.

I replaced the cable. no luck.

I moved the video cable from the DVD player to the VCR and the VCR displayed fine.

So the DVD player's gone bad.

I don't know why.

Once again: Waaaah!

2. You may have set it on progressive scan.
Do you use video out or RBG to connect it?

4. Actually, by using s-video with a svideo-composite converter,
progressive scan WORKS (albeit in b&w only).

But prog. scan was off originally. :(

The whole setup is composite (video out/in)

3. You didn't accidentally move the switch
to component video or anything like that, did you? I did that once, and it took me a while to figure it out.

5. Nope. I triple checked and use the VCR to test the connections.

6. Because DVD players are built cheaply
and durability is not built in. (Open the case if you don't believe me-- it's a circuit board, some cheap plastic gearing, and a lot of air. That's why they sell players for less than forty bucks now.)

7. I'm so sorry for you...
but don't worry. DVD players are freakin' CHEAP. You can get one at target for $40.
